Program to allow carriers to look at accident history before hiring truck divers

Washinton,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by John D. Boyd -Oct 7, 2009: -- The agency that regulates trucking safety plans to offer carriers access to an electronic database of drivers’ inspection and accident records starting in December... Drivers would have to sign a consent form, said the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, for the driver pre-employment screening program to allow trucking firms “to electronically access driver inspection and crash records as a part of the hiring process”... FMCSA said the program will also give drivers a chance to verify and correct the information that is in their records... Potential employers would get a look into the agency’s Motor Carrier Management Information System, which contains roadside inspection and compliance review results, enforcement data, state-reported crashes and motor carrier census data...

According to SmartWay, the honorees collectively will cut more than $1.3 billion in fuel costs in 2009 while eliminating six million tons of CO2 and saving more than 540 million gals. of diesel fuel... * Agency renews efforts to ensure safe transport - DOT Warns of Lithium Battery Hazards

Washington,DC<,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by R.G. Edmonson -Oct 7, 2009: -- The Department of Transportation is renewing efforts to ensure the safe transport of lithium batteries... The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and Federal Aviation Administration issued a joint safety advisory on Wednesday to promote awareness of a hazard implicated in more than 40 incidents since 1991... On July 15, a shipment of several thousand loosely packed cell phone batteries was found smoking after it had been delivered to its destination. On August 14, a shipment of e-cigarettes, which contain lithium batteries, caught fire in an aircraft’s cargo hold... The regulations require packing for shipment that prevents breakage, short circuits or overheating... PHMSA said shippers that violate the regulations governing the transport of lithium batteries could face civil penalties up to $100,000 per violation, or a fine of $500,000 and 10 years in prison for a criminal conviction...


* Senator Sees Industry Support for Fuel Tax Hike

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by John D. Boyd -Oct 7, 2009: -- Voinovich predicts big push by manufacturing, truckers for early transport bill... The top Republican on the Senate’s Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee predicted that truckers, manufacturers and other key industry groups will push for a higher federal motor fuels tax to help get an early surface transportation law through Congress... Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, told reporters that since the transport programs in the former multi-year highway law will expire after this month, “there’s an effort being made right now to try to figure out a compromise on the time for the extension”... Congress has not increased gasoline and diesel fuel taxes since 1993. Voinovich repeated his call to hike the fuel tax 10 cents a gallon, and then index it to inflation so that it keeps growing over the years without a new vote each time by Congress...
