TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA / Mexico: LTL trucking service

* California - DHL Global Forwarding launches one

-- As more international companies open shop in Mexico to serve both Latin American and U.S.A. markets, DHL Global Forwarding is working to ease complex cross-border transactions for shippers. The air and ocean freight arm of DHL last week launched Trans Border Connect, a service that helps shippers move less-than-truckload freight over the U.S.A.-Mexico border... DHL Global Forwarding plans to address some of those concerns with Trans Border Connect by acting as a single-source provider for door-to-door surface moves, working with multiple carriers. The company’s control tower in Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, has a team that specializes in getting cross-border shipments through customs while eliminating multiple carrier bills and hand-offs... The service initially will handle shipments to and from five strategic markets in the U.S.A. and Mexico, with all border crossings at Laredo, Texas. In the U.S.A., shipments are available to and from Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Los Angeles and Chicago. In Mexico, shipments are available to and from Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterey, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi...

* Finland - Gears up for ’super trucks’

(Photo)
Helsinki,Finland -Irish Trucker -4 December 2012: -- The Finnish government has obtained parliamentary (the Eduskunta) approval to allow HGVs of up to 76 tonnes gross weight on its roads. Moreover, the legal height of trucks is to be increased from 4.2 metres to 4.4 metres... The new regulations, which require a final sanction by the European Commission, are set to take effect on 1 January 2013... The changes mark a more committed indirect support mechanism by government to aid a weakened Finnish transport sector, struggling under the weight of fuel costs, by helping to bolster profitability and reduce the cost-base of the country’s hauliers... The new 76-tonne limit has been sought by the transport industry in Finland since 2010. At present, the maximum permissible weights and dimensions of heavy vehicles allowed to operate on roads in Finland is up to 60 tonnes – 25 metres in length...

* Canada  - Truckers launch campaign against EOBRs in

British Columbia, Canada -Land Line, by David Tanner -7 Aug 2012: -- Canadian truckers are hoping a postcard campaign gets the point across that a mandate for electronic logs will not improve safety over paper logs and will cost businesses a significant chunk of change... The North American Truckers Guild, based in British Columbia, Canada, launched the online campaign last week. The timing is right, President Larry J. Hall says, because the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators is currently developing standards for electronic on-board recorders, or EOBRs, ahead of what could eventually become a government mandate for the devices... The CCMTA has invited stakeholders, including the NATG, to comment on what an EOBR should or shouldn’t do, and what kinds of standards the devices should have if or when the government takes up a mandate...
