TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - TWIC enrollment exceeds 1.36 million

1,365,433 workers had enrolled and 62,574 applicants were disqualified initially

Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Charlie Morasch -October 5, 2009: -- Enrollment figures for TSA’s Transportation Worker Identification Credential continue to climb, though it appears the majority of eligible applicants have already signed up... As of last week, 1,365,433 workers had enrolled in TWIC – the biometric card required for nearly 1.5 million port employees, longshoremen, mariners, truckers and others who require unescorted access to secure areas of ports. They need to have background checks before being issued cards with their biometric data and residency documentation... TSA says that 62,574 applicants were disqualified initially after routine security threat assessments, although 32,835 of those disqualified applicants appealed the decision. * Massachusetts road safety bills cover snow-free trucks, headlight use and road rage

MA,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Keith Goble -October 5, 2009: -- Several bills of interest are drawing consideration in Massachusetts’ Joint Committee on Transportation. Among them are bills that would require snow and ice removal from trucks before taking to roadways, as well as use of headlights in bad weather. Another bill addresses road rage... The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is opposed to one bill that would get tough with truck drivers who fail to clear snow and ice off their vehicles...

* California - Truck Show Latino set for Oct. 17-18 in Pomona

The show will feature a number of exhibitors and seminars as well as an invention contest and a talent contest where the winner will have a chance to record a song in Nashville, TN... Educational seminars will take place on Friday and Saturday. They will be conducted by OOIDA, the Oklahoma Safety Management Council, the Oklahoma Trucking Association, and Women in Trucking...
