NEIGHBORING COMPLAIN * USA - Haverhill residents want big trucks out of their neighborhood
Signs ban the vehicles, but law needed to support the signs
Haverhill,MA,USA -The Eagle Tribune (North Andover,MA), by Bill Cantwell -April 05, 2008: -- They are tired of living with it — the rumble that rattles their homes, the noise of loud engines, and the threat that their newly paved street will be busted up again... Mill Street residents say tractor-trailers and other heavy trucks roll through their neighborhood, even though street signs ban those vehicles from using the road... They want police to enforce the ban, but there's one problem: The city has no law to allow enforcement of the signs... * Ban on noisy trucks? Dover's fire chief says not so fast
Boston,MAS,USA -The Boston Globe, by Anna Fiorentino -April 6, 2008: -- Dover's fire chief would like to put the brakes on a proposal to ban a certain kind of noisy braking in town. The proposal, placed on the May 5 Town Meeting warrant by a group of Dedham Street residents, seeks approval of a ban on the use of a secondary braking system found on large diesel trucks - including fire engines - on public roadways... The idea is to reduce noise pollution, but engine braking, also called "Jake braking," is essential because it reduces wear and overheating of truck brakes, and allows the driver more control over the vehicle, according to Dover Fire Chief John Hughes... Hughes said that if firetrucks - or any large truck - are equipped with such a mechanism, the operator should be able to use it... The proposal in Dover calls for the Police Department to enforce the ban, with violators facing fines up to $300...
