NOISY & DANGEROUS TRUCKS * New Zealand: Neighboring complaints

* Northland - Frustrated and angry Northlanders want heavy trucks off rural roads

--- Whangarei locals have decided to pull together to resolve fears and disruption caused by logging trucks on rural roads... An explosive meeting at the Otaika Community Hall last night saw more than a hundred frustrated and angry residents show up with some threatening to block the roads from logging trucks if action wasn't taken... It follows a spate of logging truck crashes in Northland over the past few weeks that saw four truck drivers roll their vehicles. Residents say twisty narrow roads like Otaika Valley aren't geared up for the large trucks that frequently use the road... They say the trucks speed, are noisy and dangerous... Some locals are calling for roads like Otaika Valley to be closed off to large trucks, others say the speed limit should be reduced... The Transport Agency is investigating a range of options to improve safety at the intersection of SH1 and Loop Road as part of the Government's package of accelerated regional projects...

NEIGHBORHOOD COMPLAINTS * USA

* West Virginia - Downstream Strategies: Heavy trucks play a part in greenhouse gas emissions

(Photo: Heavy truck makes a wide turn onto the Walnut Street Bridge in downtown Morgantown) Morgantown,VA,USA -The State Journal, by Krista Baker -Jun 26, 2014: -- If you're in the Morgantown area, near Walnut and Spruce Street, chances are you're going to see a large truck. And loud noises are one of the biggest headaches for citizens concerned with the trucks... The noise complaints don't only come from residential neighborhoods but from businesses that say the noise interferes with meetings... The environmental consulting firm Downstream Strategies did a Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory for Morgantown. It's the first study about greenhouse gas emissions for the city. The Project Manager said the trucks play a part... "The high number of trucks that go through the city," started Jeff Simcoe, Project Manager with the Energy Program at Downstream Strategies. "I believe the trucks contribute to the congestion on the roadway which also increase the greenhouse gases emitted due to transportation because the roads can't handle that much traffic..."

Truckers' Training Site * USA - City wants to keep on trucking at landfill site

Battle continues over tractor-trailer driving school at Lopez Canyon

Van Nuys,CAL,USA -The Daily News, By Rick Orlo -18 Dec 2009: -- It began three years ago as a smart way to create jobs in the trucking industry: Use the wide-open space of the shuttered Lopez Canyon landfill as a training school for truck drivers... The battle continued Friday with an overflow hearing pitting neighboring residents against supporters of the truck academy at the Lake View Terrace landfill... The idea behind the plan was to offer a training course to 24 people for four weeks to qualify for a Class-A driver's license to operate big rigs... The proposal calls for a five-year contract, with two possible extensions for a total of 15 years. The academy would be run by a nonprofit and coordinated through the Teamsters Union... Local residents, with the support of L.A. County Supervisor, Michael Antonovich, said the academy is another intrusion into a neighborhood that had to carry more than its fair share of environmental problems for more than 20 years when the landfill was in operation... Neighboring Complains * USA - Doty asks regulators to halt trucking plans

Ver mapa más grande

Quintana,TX,USA -The Facts, by Nathaniel Lukefahr -October 19, 2009: -- An elected official has challenged federal regulators to halt what he calls an “underhanded attempt” by Freeport LNG to circumvent a verbal agreement made with residents during the terminal’s construction and bring big rigs carrying liquefied natural gas on the island... Town Councilman, Harold Doty, wrote in a letter sent Tuesday to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that the energy giant does not need to bring gas onto the island by truck anymore because its twin storage tanks are full and has a functional boil-off gas reliquefication facility. The terminal has received two ships since June 25, and the boil-off gas facility catches escaping gas and returns it to the tanks... Freeport LNG officials, however, say the company has not been acting underhandedly but will continue plans to build a trucking facility and bring big rigs onto the island to prepare for the unknown... The energy commission has not yet approved Freeport LNG’s request to bring trucks onto the island...

COMPLAINS * USA - State Looks at Keeping Big Rigs off Small Roads Bud Lowell

The New York State Department of Transportation is hoping to keep more big trucks off state highways and on the interstates

Rochester,NY,USA -WXXI (Rochester,NY) -24 Sept 2008: -- ... It's rolling out a new set of regulations at a meeting Wednesday night in Syracuse that will tighten restrictions on where long-haul trucks can roll. DOT spokesman Charles Carrier says there will be efforts to slow down traffic on certain state highways through towns and villages. Heavy trucks will have to stay on interstates or designated state routes unless they're heading for a terminal or making local pickups and deliveries. The DOT also wants to make it less desirable for truckers to drive state highways by stepping up inspections and permit enforcement checks on those roads... Carrier says the DOT has worked with local communities and the trucking industry to try and satisfy both sides without hurting business...

COMPLAINS * Australia - Trucks hit our roads

Wollondilly,NSW,Australia -The Wollondilly Advertiser -26 Aug 2008: -- Wollondilly can expect an extra 93,750 truck movements per year on our roads from November... The extra 370 trucks will begin daily return trips along Appin and Picton roads when the Port Kembla harbour expansion begins in three months... The figures were released as part of the Sydney Wollongong Corridor Strategy, much to the shock of Wollondilly Mayor Judy Hannan and Camden police crime manager Paul Albury... Cr Hannan said this information made the Maldon-Dombarton rail line more vital than ever... (This photo was snapped in Appin by Cr Norman Jew - Too many trucks: Police are concerned that an extra 370 trucks per day on Appin and Picton Roads could lead to more fatal accidents)

RESIDENTS' COMPLAINS * USA - Advocates of ban on trucks declare victory

Norwalk,CT,USA -The Norwalk Advocate, by John Nickerson -11 Aug 2008: -- A year ago, before through-trucks were banned from traveling Route 136 in Darien and Rowayton, Jody Sattler's neighborhood was filled with the rumbling of wheels headed to and from Interstate 95... Living at Highland Avenue and McKinney Street on Route 136, Sattler watched trucks swing around the 90-degree turn to the village center, sometimes seeing their tires lift off the ground as they careened around the corner... The State Traffic Commission banned through-trucks a year ago, after nearly two decades of trying to block trucks from traversing the waterside community... Residents complained that too many trucks were racing on their way to businesses such as UPS and FedEx on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and other trucking and hauling outfits in South Norwalk... Some companies still are sneaking trucks through, but the ban is working, residents said... (Photo by Chris Preovolos/Staff photo - Darien police Officer Jim Martin is poised to intercept a truck, if necessary, as he enforces a no-through-trucks ban on state Route 136 in Darien on Thursday)

NEIGHBORHOOD COMPLAINS * USA - Tired of trucks

Vehicles hauling fill for a new sports park in Medford have residents of a Jacksonville-area neighborhood fuming

Medford,Jacksonville,ORE,USA -The Mail Tribune, by TONY BOOM -July 21, 2008: -- ... By 7 o'clock, a constant stream of big diesel trucks will be hauling fill material past her house, and the parade will continue for the next 11 hours... Knife River Materials has up to 35 rigs per day going past Cox's garden and through downtown Jacksonville... They're hauling 80,000 tons of fill from a quarry on Pair-A-Dice Ranch Road to the new sports park complex in south Medford. Other trucking companies are hauling from additional quarry sites up the road, swelling the traffic load... "Jacksonville is a seasonal economy," said Whitman Parker, publisher of The Jacksonville Review, which has an office on California Street. "A better time for the project might have been April or May or September or October, not July and August, at the most critical economical time for this town."... NEIGHBORING COMPLAIN * USA - Haverhill residents want big trucks out of their neighborhood

Signs ban the vehicles, but law needed to support the signs

Haverhill,MA,USA -The Eagle Tribune (North Andover,MA), by Bill Cantwell -April 05, 2008: -- They are tired of living with it — the rumble that rattles their homes, the noise of loud engines, and the threat that their newly paved street will be busted up again... Mill Street residents say tractor-trailers and other heavy trucks roll through their neighborhood, even though street signs ban those vehicles from using the road... They want police to enforce the ban, but there's one problem: The city has no law to allow enforcement of the signs... (Picture by Katie McMahon - Many large diesel trucks are equipped with Jake brakes, a system that can produce an earsplitting, jackhammer noise)

* Ban on noisy trucks? Dover's fire chief says not so fast

Boston,MAS,USA -The Boston Globe, by Anna Fiorentino -April 6, 2008: -- Dover's fire chief would like to put the brakes on a proposal to ban a certain kind of noisy braking in town. The proposal, placed on the May 5 Town Meeting warrant by a group of Dedham Street residents, seeks approval of a ban on the use of a secondary braking system found on large diesel trucks - including fire engines - on public roadways... The idea is to reduce noise pollution, but engine braking, also called "Jake braking," is essential because it reduces wear and overheating of truck brakes, and allows the driver more control over the vehicle, according to Dover Fire Chief John Hughes... Hughes said that if firetrucks - or any large truck - are equipped with such a mechanism, the operator should be able to use it... The proposal in Dover
calls for the Police Department to enforce the ban, with violators facing fines up to $300... (Photo by Justine Hunt/Boston Globe - Many large diesel trucks are equipped with Jake brakes, a system that can produce an earsplitting, jackhammer noise)

COMPLAINS * USA - Port wants truck parking lot

Some relief is in sight for Georgetown residents irked by tractor-trailer trucks that haul cargo from Port of Seattle docks by day and park along neighborhood streets at night

Seattle,WASH,USA -The Seattle Times, by Bob Young -March 25, 2008: -- ... The Port wants to make a 10-acre vacant property it owns on Harbor Island available for truck parking to alleviate Georgetown's complaints about diesel soot, crowded streets and crushed curbs... The Port of Seattle Commission is scheduled to vote today on spending $450,000 to design the area, first for truck parking on an interim basis, then for eventual use as a cargo terminal when increased trade requires... Activists pushing for cleaner Port trucks and unionized drivers in Seattle criticized the Harbor Island plan because it would charge drivers for parking and provide space for only about 200 trucks. About 1,600 truckers haul freight from Seattle docks to nearby rail yards, working as low-paid independent owners and operators... (Photo by MIKE SIEGEL / THE SEATTLE TIMES - Georgetown residents have complained about noise, pollution and crowding from the hundreds of trucks that park overnight there after days spent hauling containers from the Port of Seattle.)

NEIGHBORING COMPLAINS * Australia - Why don't trucks use the freeways?

Melbourne,Victoria,Australia -The Age, by Emma Walker -February 23, 2008: -- Just under a year ago, I bought a house in Yarraville. It's on Francis Street, the one with all the trucks. Yes, I knew what I was buying into... I fell in love with the "village-like atmosphere" spruiked by every local real estate agent...I soon discovered that every day 20,000 trucks pass through my area, 8000 of them up and down my street alone. They're on a cheaper (no tolls) route to the busiest port in Australia... Even post-curfew, residents on Francis Street experience traffic noise that exceeds Australian standards... But it isn't just the noise that bothers me... No, what really bothers me is the health implications... Links between diesel fumes and cancer, most typically lung cancer, are now established. Virtually every one of those 8000 trucks a day is releasing carcinogenic particles into the air... Neighbors that live on area rural roads are concerned about the noise, speed, and accidents caused by the big trucks

Bloomfield,N.Y.,USA -13wham, by Sean Carroll -22 Feb 2008: -- An overturned tractor trailer on Route I-490 disrupted traffic near downtown Rochester on Thursday afternoon and inconvenienced many drivers. But neighbors that live on area rural roads are concerned about the noise, speed, and accidents caused by the big trucks... The Bloomfield Town Board wrote letters to the trucking companies asking them--as a courtesy--to avoid the village roads... State DOT Commissioner Astrid Glynn said she's looking at ways to keep these trucks on the thruways and interstates and off smaller roads... Glynn said New York is one of the most truck dependent states in the country. She wants to balance that industry's concerns with those of neighbors to create safer trucking routes...

Neighboring Complains * UK - Rural Britain wants to take itself off the GPS map

This little village would seem to be an obviously poor place through which to drive your average large truck. Its streets were built in the days of horses and carts

Wedmore,England,UK -The International Herald Tribune, by Sarah Lyall -December 3, 2007: -- ... It is in an obscure rural location. There is no room to pass and no room to maneuver... But trucks and tractor-trailers come here all the time, as they do in similarly inappropriate spots across Britain, directed by GPS navigation devices, which fail to appreciate that the shortest route is not always the best route... "They have no idea where they are," said Wayne Hahn, a local store owner who watches a daily parade of vehicles come to grief - hitting fences, shearing mirrors from cars and becoming stuck at the bottom of Wedmore's lone hill. Once, he saw an enormous tractor-trailer speeding by, unaware that in its wake it was dragging a passenger car, complete with distraught passenger... With villagers at their wits' end, John Sanderson, chairman of the parish council, has proposed a seemingly simple remedy: getting the route through Wedmore removed from the GPS navigation systems used by large vehicles... Sanderson said he would not go so far as to advocate eradicating Wedmore from the map. But communities in similar predicaments - and there are hundreds of them, given that Britain is replete with tiny rural villages similarly ill-suited for big trucks - say that such a solution sounds good to them... (Photo by Danfung Dennis for The New York Times: Wedmore, like many British villages, has been overrun by trucks following routes set by GPS navigation devices that do not take into account their narrow roads and sharp corners)

OPINION * USA - Limit the amount of trucks on residential roads

Finally, a fuss is occurring that involves trucks using our public highways

Allentown,PA,USA -The Allentown Morning Call -October 15, 2007: -- The Eisenhower administration made a serious error in allowing the dismantling of our vast railroad system in favor of the interstate highways. While the modernization of the highways was necessary, care should have been taken to maintain a strong network of railroads for the efficient transport of raw materials and manufactured goods... However, discussions need to go far beyond the issue of tolls on I-80. We will not allow manufacturing and commerce in our residential neighborhoods. Why then is gigantic freight-hauling equipment allowed to share and frequently dominate the same streets and roads used by the general public -- a public that often includes inexperienced, under- the-influence, and incapable drivers?...

Congestion on major city traffic routes * USA - Is pushing truck drivers to seek faster routes through the city

As the city traffic becomes increasingly heavy, more and more truck drivers apparently are trying to find quicker, less congested routes through and around the city

Lawrence,KS,USA -The Lawrence Journal World, byJ-W Editorials -October 2, 2007: -- Lawrence used to have designated routes for large trucks passing through the city. Either the law governing such traffic has lapsed or law enforcement officers are looking the other way rather than enforcing the city’s ordinance... Now, large 18-wheelers are using neighborhood streets that once were reserved for passenger cars or small trucks... Something needs to be done because Lawrence’s traffic congestion is only getting worse. And it doesn’t appear that any significant corrective actions are likely to occur for years to come... If the truck route law has expired, it is far past time to get a new law on the books...

Complains * USA - Truckers Not Playing By the Rules

Trucking companies based in Beaumont are warning motorists about the dangers of trucks operated by out of state competitors

Beaumont,Texas,USA -KFDM/TV News, by Ashley Rodrigue -September 26, 2007: -- ... The locals say many out of state truckers are not playing by the rules, and they claim that puts you at risk on the roads... Rodger Allen says he and his workers travel the highways and byways in Beaumont several times a day. Every time, they do it legally, as opposed to some out-of-town companies that Allen claims are constantly breaking the law... (Photo from www.blogtourusa.com)

Complains * USA - The huge trucks are going to be a problem.

Coconut Grove,MI,USA -Coconut Gove Grapevine -May 18, 2007: -- I really want to find some good things to say about the new Home Depot... The customers seem to be at a minimum, while the parking lot is full, it isn't a madhouse, and it seems nice to have life there instead of that empty lot which was sitting there empty for so long... So far, the only problem I can see are the large trucks. They block traffic and hold up traffic. Like today, this huge truck could not make a right on a red, it is too large and slow to do that, so traffic behind it was clogged for what seemed blocks. It held traffic up on Bird Ave. and then when it turned onto 32nd Ave. it held traffic up there, taking up both lanes at US1, trying to make a right turn without jack knifing...
