The Freight Brokerages * USA - A road to ruin ?
Why are truckers running on empty?
Charleston,WV,USA -The Charleston Gazette, by Joe Morris -April 6, 2008: -- Fuel prices rise and fall, but there's something unique about the current inflation in diesel prices that is driving West Virginia truckers to the brink of bankruptcy, and beyond... Truckers say their diesel costs have multiplied but they haven't been able to raise their rates in kind. Their direct clients and the transport brokerage companies that dominate the industry nationwide won't budge, knowing they can usually find someone desperate enough to accept a money-losing hitch... The suspicion among many in the industry is that the brokerages are demanding, and getting, diesel-adjusted rates from their shipping customers but then not passing those rates on to truckers... Representatives from three of the biggest trucking brokerage companies - the Con-Way Inc. unit Menlo Logistics, Landstar System Inc. and Schneider National Inc. - either declined to comment for this article or didn't return calls for comment... Independent trucker Ott Martin of Reedy, who runs Martin Timber and transports for Bear Run Logging, both in Reedy, said clients haven't changed his rates in five years... (See Photo by Kenny Kemp - About 50 truckers lined up along Kanawha Boulevard at the Capitol last week to protest the high price of diesel. They say they’re paying more for fuel but not getting rates to reflect it)
