ALTERNATIVE FUEL * USA - Biogasoline idea refined by Dutch Shell & U.S. firm
Unlike ethanol, the new fuel from non-food crops is a gas substitute
Houston,TX,USA -The Houston Chronicle, by BRETT CLANTON -March 26, 2008: -- It looks like gasoline, smells like gasoline and runs in regular gasoline engines, but it isn't made from crude oil; it comes from crops... Royal Dutch Shell is partnering with Virent Energy Systems, a Wisconsin "bioscience firm," to develop what it calls biogasoline. The synthetic fuel made from plant material can be substituted for petroleum gasoline, the companies said...
Advantages
• Conventional gasoline engines can run on it without modification.
• Existing oil industry infrastructure can be used to transport and store it.
• Non-food crops like switchgrass and agricultural waste like sugar cane pulp can be used to make it.
Hurdles
• Costs and time to market are still unknown.
• New plants will be necessary, delaying launch.
• Biogasoline could adversely affect the large, existing ethanol industry.
