PENALTIES for DON'T RECALL * India: From Oct 1

* Delhi - Auto cos who don’t recall vehicles despite having safety defects may face penalties 


 -- Automobile companies that don't recall vehicles despite having clear evidence of safety defects may face penalties starting October 1, according to rules in the making... Also on the cards is a government-appointed nodal agency that could launch its own investigation into safety issues and even recommend the government to order a recall... India has no mandatory vehicle recall policy, unlike in developed markets like Europe, Japan and the US... Local automakers follow a voluntary code of recall adopted by the industry in July 2012, and have since recalled about 2 million vehicles to fix seat belt tensioners, air bags and problems with brake systems. But transportation experts and consumers rue lack of government norms to make it compulsory for firms to act... The new proposals say the nodal agency shall monitor the recall process and audit the records...

--- Ford Motor Co. reaped the benefits of its costly F-150 truck revamp, doubling income in its first quarter and posting a North American operating margin rivaling those returned by luxury brands... The company is among auto makers benefiting from record U.S. light-vehicle demand and low gasoline prices, a trend fueling sales of the most profitable models on dealer lots. As sales of trucks and sport-utility vehicles soar, Ford is receiving a strong profit and sales boost from product redesigns... Net income more than doubles amid continued sales growth in the U.S. light-vehicle market... The No. 2 U.S. auto maker by sales also is gaining steam in China, earning more than $400 million last quarter, combined with an abrupt reversal of fortunes and return to profit in Europe, is more than offsetting weakness in South America, Russia and other emerging markets... Ford reported profit of $2.5 billion, in the first quarter of 2015...

 * Michigan - Ford recalls more than 200,000 trucks, SUVs, cars
-- Ford is recalling nearly 202,000 pickup trucks, SUVs and cars in North America because the automatic transmissions can suddenly downshift to first gear... The recall covers the 2011 and 2012 F-150 and the 2012 Expedition, Mustang and Lincoln Navigator. Ford says a speed sensor can force vehicles into a downshift... The company says the problem has caused three crashes but no injuries... The company also is recalling over 81,000 Explorer SUVs to fix a rear suspension problem that can cause loss of steering control. That recall covers SUVs from 2014 and 2015. Suspension links could fracture due to poor welds...

GM's RECALL * USA: 1 million TRUCK PICKUPS

* Michigan - GM recalls 1 million trucks for faulty seat belts

 -- General Motors said Friday it is recalling nearly 1.04 million newer pickup trucks for a seat belt flaw... The largest U.S. automaker said the recall of the 2014-15 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups is not linked to any crashes or injuries... GM said the recall in the United States includes 895,232 vehicles and a stop-sale of approximately 3,000 new 2014 and 2015 model year pickups still on dealer lots... The recall was prompted by warranty data that showed the flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the vehicle can separate over time as a result of the driver repeatedly bending the cable when entering the seat... Dealers will enlarge the side shield opening, install a bracket on the tensioner, and if necessary, replace the tensioner assembly... The recall includes about 142,000 vehicles outside the United States...

‘Chevy Shake’ * USA

* Michigan - Mysterious, unfixable vibrations affecting GM pickup trucks

  (Video by Mike Groesbeck - Sep 29, 2015: Many of the new 2014-2015 Silverado and Sierra trucks were built with faulty parts, which cause multiple issues, including vibrations) 

 -- GM engineers can’t seem to pinpoint the cause of a mysterious recurring issue in vehicles riding on GM’s K2XX platform, which includes its full-size trucks and SUVs, a problem that was referred to by one dealer as “The Chevy Shake” ...  Because GM can’t isolate the cause of the problem, a permanent fix has also been elusive... In total, there are 301 complaints on the NHTSA database concerning 2014 – 2015 Chevy Silverados and GMC Sierras, 31 of which are about the vibration, which equates to about 10 percent. There are no complaints regarding the 2016 model year trucks yet... Unless it is deemed a safety issue, GM is not obligated to recall the trucks. And the detailed information bulletin shows that the brand is working to correct the problem... But until the root cause of "the Chevy shake" can be pinpointed, owners of these pickup trucks will have to continue driving their vibrating pickups and deal with seemingly endless visits to the shop...

TRUCKS RECALLS USA: * Mack's - ** GM's

* DC - Several Mack Trucks models recalled for power train/steering issue 

-- Mack Trucks is recalling certain models in two separate issues filed with the National Highway Safety Administration, according to NHTSA documents... The first recall affects Mack Granite and Mack Terrapro trucks model year 2016-2017. The affected trucks may be missing a roll pin to secure the upper steering yoke to the steering shaft. A complete loss of steering may occur, increasing the chances of a crash... A separate recall affects Mack Granite, Pinnacle CHU, Pinnacle CXU, Terrapro LEU, Terrapro MRU and Titan TD trucks model year 2012-2015 and Mack LR trucks model year 2015. In affected trucks, the cap nut that retains the interaxle driveshaft yoke to the rear axle input shaft may loosen. The driveshaft can possibly disconnect as a result... Mack will notify owners and replace any parts free of charge. The first recall affecting only Granite and Terrapro trucks is expected to begin on March 11. The other recall is slated for April 15...

* Michigan - GM recalls 1,750 midsize pickup trucks, sedans on air bag concerns
-- General Motors Co. said on Wednesday it has issued a stop-sales order and recalled about 1,750 new-model Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks and Chevrolet Malibu sedans in the United States and Canada because of potentially defective front air bags. Some of the 2016 models will also be recalled in Mexico... There have been no reported injuries related to the air bags placed in the steering wheel of the vehicles... GM did not name the supplier of the potentially faulty air bag module, but said it was not made by Takata Corp., which is embroiled in a recall of millions of its air bag inflators... GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said the issue is not expected to significantly affect sales of the popular midsize pickups or midsize sedan. Any delay in sales is expected to be short-lived, he said. U.S. law keeps dealers from selling a vehicle involved in a recall without fixing it first...

 -- Takata Corp. officials manipulated test data for potentially defective air bag inflators that have killed at least nine people and injured dozens in the U.S., before and after the massive recalls of millions of vehicles began, according to a report by the Senate Commerce Committee released on Tuesday...The minority staff report — unveiled by the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation — reveals that Takata employees altered test data for the potentially defective air bags even after recalls began...

TRUCKS' RECALL * USA: Daimler's ones

* Oregon - Daimler recalls some Freightliner Cascadia trucks for CNG fix

-- Daimler Trucks North America said it is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Freightliner Cascadia trucks that were manufactured between March 27, 2015 and Nov. 4, 2014, and are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG)... The affected vehicles have a tailpipe that allows hot exhaust to exit near the CNG tank pressure relief device. Hot exhaust may cause the CNG to be unexpectedly released from the tank, and discharge of CNG in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire... There have been 48 recalls on Cascadia vehicles in recent years. Since 2004, Cascadia’s have experienced approximately 57 recalls due to hazards with various components, including the engine, fifth-wheel assembly, manual transmission, idler and attachment and electrical system...

TRUCKS RECALLS * WORLDWIDE

* USA and Canada - School Bus and Truck Engines Are Recalled

Vancouver,BC,Canada -Associated Press -March 1, 2014: -- Engine maker Cummins Inc. and its joint venture Cummins Westport Inc. are recalling 25,013 engines because cold weather could cause a sensor to fail, resulting in an exhaust fire... No injuries have been reported but Cummins Westport has received two reports of flames coming from vehicle exhaust pipes... The engines can be found in a variety of commercial vehicles including school and transit buses as well as fire trucks. Among the companies to which Cummins shipped the engines is school bus manufacturer Blue Bird Corp. The recall affects Cummins Westport Model ISL G engines made between Sept. 12, 2007 through Feb. 2, 2014 and Cummins Westport Model ISX12 G engines made from Feb. 19, 2013 through Feb. 2, 2014... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that condensation in the tubes that distribute air coming into the engine may freeze during cold weather. That ice could interfere with the proper operation of the pressure sensor, potentially increasing exhaust temperatures or causing flames from the exhaust pipe, which could burn a person or cause a fire...


* Japan - Isuzu Recalls Over 36K Trucks

Tokyo,Japan -Kyodo -4 March 2014: -- Isuzu Motors Ltd. said Tuesday it is recalling 36,823 Forward midsize trucks due to possible coolant fluid leaks that could result in dashboard fires at the front passenger seats... In a report filed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Japanese truck and bus maker said it is recalling the trucks manufactured from April 1993 to July 2007... There have been seven fires involving the model since September 2010 but no injuries have been reported. In May 2012, a Forward truck was destroyed by fire in Kawagoe in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo... According to the ministry, engine coolant could leak from heaters in the dashboards and enter control units, resulting in short circuits that could trigger fires... The problem occurs when users do not replace the coolant periodically and the liquid leaks as a result of rust and cracks in pipes. Isuzu said it will take preventive measures such as placing waterproof covers on circuit boards...

* California / USA - Honda recalls Odyssey minivan so liftgate won't conk you

Torrance, CAL,USA -USA TODAY, by Chris Woodyard -Feb 22, 2012: -- Honda is voluntarily recalling 45,800 Odyssey minivans to fix the struts that hold up the power liftgate in back so it won't accidently fall and conk people on the head, hand or some other body part... The recall covers 2008 and early-2009 Odyssey EX-L and Touring minivans. The problem involves two gas-filled struts that hold up the power liftgate. If the liftgate struts fail, it "may result in the tailgate closing under its own power, possibly unexpectedly, with the potential risk of injury and inconvenience to customers," Honda says in a statement...
That's a photo of the 2008 model, above. To give you an idea of what the liftgate looks like, we show the 2011 model at right that's not covered by the recall...


* Japan - Nissan recalls 250,000 for fuel system glitchby

Nishi-ku,Yokohama,Japon -NHTSA/Reuters/Motor Trends (USA), by Jason Udy -February 23 2012:  --  Nissan is recalling certain global models including Juke crossovers built in Britain; Serena minvans, Infiniti M and QX models built in Japan; March/Micra hatchbacks built in India; and Tiida subcompacts built in China for a fuel system fix...  Fuel rails in direct-injection engines could have a “mechanical glitch” which in extreme cases could cause a fuel leak. On certain models, an insufficiently tightened fuel rail pressure sensor could gradually loosen contributing to the fuel leak. A fuel leak could lead to an increased fire risk possibly resulting in injury or death...  Nissan says as many as 250,000 Juke crossovers, Serena minivans, Infiniti M sedans, Infiniti QX SUVs, March/Micra hatchbacks, and Tiida subcompacts between August 2009 and January 2012 may be affected...

* Washington - Paccar Recalls Some Kenworth, Peterbilt Trucks Over Brake Issue

Bellevue,WASH,USA -Bloomberg/Transport Topics -6 Feb 2012: -- Truck maker Paccar Inc. has recalled some 2012-2013 model year Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks equipped with Bendix brake components that may leak.. The almost 16,000 affected trucks were built between January 2011 and Jan. 19 of this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement... The trucks are equipped with Bendix ATR-6 antilock traction relay valves that may leak fluid in extremely cold conditions and cause the brakes to engage, overheat and could lead to a fire or loss of control of the truck... Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems last month notified NHTSA of the defect in a valve that helps with traction and stability control, which may leak when temperatures fall below 0 degrees Fahrenheit...

* DC - General Motors recalling 1,798 vans for faulty airbags


Washington,DC,USA -Left Lane News, by Mark Kleis -Nov 21st, 2011: -- General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have announced the recall of nearly 2,000 vans due to a safety flaw...  The recall covers a total of 1,798 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans manufactured between June 2, 2011 and October 17, 2011, citing the failure of the second stage of the dual-stage airbag deployment in the event of a severe frontal impact...  Because the airbags do not comply with the occupant crash protection code, the airbags will need to be replaced in the suspect vehicles...  The recall will begin later this month and owners will be contacted by GM...

* MAN issues brake valve recall

Wacol, Brisbane Australasian -Transport News -May 19, 2011: -- MAN Automotive Imports is recalling a number of TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS and TGX trucks after a potential problem was identified with the braking system...  The recall is for trucks fitted with either a Wabco Park Brake or Anti-Jack Knife Valve that were manufactured between April 2009 and February 2011...  The valve is fitted with steel balls to seal the processing bores. Wyoming,NSW,Australia -ATN -May 12, 2011: -- Western Star Trucks Australia is recalling 273 trucks with Australian-fitted Cummins ISX and Signature engines due to an issue with the routing of the fuel line... The recall centres on vehicles that may have an incorrect routing of the fuel line running from the fuel filter outlet to the engine fuel pump... There is potential for the fuel line to rub on the main cab power harness conduit, causing the main power fuse to blow and stopping the engine without warning... Western Star Trucks Australia is contacting owners by mail to arrange to have the fuel line relocated away from the power harness... * DAF recalls CF trucks

Bayswater,VIC,Australia -ATN -May 12, 2011: -- DAF Trucks Australia is recalling a number of its CF85 trucks after reports of engine oil leaks on the latest Euro 5 versions... The recall notice says the fault is linked to the centrifugal oil filter assembly, which may have worked loose, and in turn could cause engine oil to leak into the engine bay and onto the road... The trucks involved in the recall were imported into Australia between March 2010 and March 2011. Owners will be notified by PACCAR Australia via registered mail... Anaheim,CAL,USA -Fleet Owner -May 4, 2011: -- For the first time in two years, Isuzu Commercial Truck of America is in full production of gasoline-powered N-Series medium-duty trucks at the Spartan Motors factory in Charlotte, MI... The new 2012 N-Gas models are powered by the Vortec 6.0-liter small-block V8 engine that produces 297 horsepower at 4,300 rpm and generates 372 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission with double overdrive and lock-up torque converter for enhanced fuel economy and performance, Isuzu noted. This is an upgrade; previous N-Series gasoline models offered only a four-speed automatic...


* USA - Recall Alert: Nissan Pathfinder, Infiniti QX4

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection -25 April 2011: -- Nissan is issuing a recall for nearly 200,000 sport-utility vehicles sold in the U.S. under both its Nissan and Infiniti brands... The vehicles affected include 195,991 copies of the 1996-2004 Nissan Pathfinder and the 1997-2003 Infiniti QX4. Only vehicles sold or currently registered in northern-tier states are included in the recall. Those states include: Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin--as well as the District of Columbia... In both, the vehicles could be exposed to heavy road salt, which could in turn find its way into the struts. The intrusion can lead to rusting inside the strut tower housing--which may cause cracking and failure, and a loss of steering control...

Sales rose 4.7% to $33.1 billion, following last year’s sale of Volvo cars...  CEO Alan Mulally put the company’s focus on fuel economy and raised U.S. prices twice this year as the cost of gasoline has risen 26%. * DC - NHTSA Probing GM over Faulty Gas Gauges

Washington,DC,USA -Detroit Free Press - April 30, 2011: -- NHTSA opened investigation into whether nearly 1M GM vehicles may have faulty gas gauges. Agency estimates 865K vehicles could be affected... NHTSA investigators said, "Consumers have reported incidents of inaccurate and random fuel level reading while driving, resulting in the vehicle running out of fuel and causing vehicle stall with no restart" ...  Received 668 complaints alleging inaccurate fuel gauge reading while driving. 
Model year 2005-07 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7x...  Of complaints, 58 involved stalls, and 43 driver specifically reported fuel level reading indicated more fuel availability... NHTSA said at least 1 crash allegedly took place when vehicle ran out of gas...

Nissan Motor Co., is recalling approximately 2.2 million light trucks and cars globally

Nishi-ku,Yokohama,Japón -Bloomberg/Transport Topics (USA) -1 Nov 2010: -- Nissan Motor Co., is recalling approximately 2.2 million light trucks and cars globally to fix an ignition defect that can cause an engine to stall...  In the U.S. and Canada, the recall covers about 770,000 2004 - 2006 model-year Titan pickups and Armada sport utility vehicles, and 2005 - 2006 model-year Frontier pickups and Pathfinder and Xterra SUVs...  Nissan said the vehicles are being recalled due to an electrical relay in their electric control modules that may experience “silicon vapor,” which the company said “can create oxidation on the electrical contacts in the relay that may lead to engine performance issues, including the possibility of stalling at low engine speeds" ...  Nissan will replace the relays free of charge beginning in December... The recall includes all 12,500 iQ models in the UK, although the problem has only been identified in Japan... The decision was made after it was found that power steering sensors could cause a problem when driving over bumps, making steering heavier, a spokesman said... * USA - Recall Issued For 2011 Mercedes-Benz E, GL, M, and R Classes

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection -November 5, 2010: -- Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for E, GL, M, and R Class vehicles from the 2011 model year. According to a bulletin from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the fuel filter O-ring on those models may have been improperly lubricated, which could cause some unpleasant leakage. The NHTSA bulletin explains  it's interesting for a couple of reasons. First, there's no mention of the recall affecting only diesel engines elsewhere in the notice. (A Mercedes-Benz customer care representative has confirmed that the recall applies to all models.) And second, the danger posed by the flaw seems to affect other drivers rather than the owners of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Since all of the affected vehicles come from the 2011 model year, this recall isn't especially big -- just under 2,300 units at the moment. TRUCKS RECALL * Australia - Isuzu issues truck recall

Eagle Farm,Brisbane,QLD,AUST -ATN -September 27, 2010: -- Isuzu Australia is recalling a number of its F, C and E-Series trucks after concerns were raised about steering components... A total of 41 trucks are being recalled across the three models after it was found the factory in Japan may not have properly heat-treated the outer arm steering bolt... The bolt, which connects the steering arm to the knuckle, could fail and dislodge the steering arm... Isuzu is attempting to contact the owners of the trucks, built between November 2005 and February 2006, to have the trucks taken to the nearest Isuzu dealer where the parts will be replaced free of charge... TRUCKS RECALL * USA - Volvo recalling 77,000 VN tractors

Volvo Trucks is recalling VN Series trucks sold in North America between 2001 and 2006 for a potential problem with corrosion in the steering gear

Greensboro,NC,USA -Fleet Owner -Jun 29, 2010: -- The recall of approximately 64,000 VNs sold in the U.S. was ordered last week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, citing a problem with TRW sealed drag links “which if left untreated may result in a ball socket separation” that can “result in complete loss of steering”... VTNA has voluntarily added 10,000 trucks sold in Canada and 3,000 sold in Mexico to the recall, according to a spokesperson for the company... The problem involves a rubber sealing boot on the drag link that, if damaged, can allow water and road debris to enter the ball socket, leading to corrosion and accelerated wear, according to the VTNA spokesperson. If left untreated, the wear could lead to ball socket separation, but “it takes a prolonged period – in some cases years – for corrosion to reach the point where steering is affected,” he said... Portland,Oregon,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Reed Black -March 19, 2010: -- Freightliner says that by April 23 it hopes to have notified the owners of nearly 9,000 trucks that their vehicles may have a potentially dangerous flaw... The problem is that the left-hand, inner tie-rod can loosen and separate from the steering rack, potentially leading to loss of control... OOIDA Member, Virgil Brown, reports an incident he experienced with his co-driver in their 2010 Cascadia. When they heard a rattling noise, they pulled over and discovered a loose bolt and nuts on the tie-rod assembly... * Sweden - Volvo CEO says many interested Renault stake

Johansson said it was unlikely that other truckmakers would buy the Renault stake in Volvo due to antitrust issues... Carlos Ghosn, the chief executive of Renault, said on February 11 he would look at divesting assets, but would not be pressured into any sales at unfavorable prices... RECALLS * Canada - Ford Recalls Over 500,000 Vehicles

To Fix Cruise Control Deactivation Switches

Toronto,ONT,CAN -AHN -October 15, 2009: -- Ford Canada will soon send notices to owners of more than half a million pickup trucks, minivans and commercial vehicles to fix the control deactivation switches. Unless the defective switches are repaired, the vehicle may burn... With the large number of vehicles involved, it would be the largest recall in Ford Canada's history, the automaker said. The recall involves vehicles made from 1992 to 2003, particularly the F-Series SuperDuty diesel trucks, Ranger trucks, Excursion diesel sport utility vehicles, Econoline commercial vans, Explorer sports utilities and Windstar minivans... Outside Canada, parent firm Ford Motor in Detroit said it would recall 4.5 million more vehicles in the U.S. for the same defective part. It would bring the total number of affected vehicles in its U.S. market to a record 14.3 million...

RECALLS * USA - Toyota recalls 3.8 million cars, trucks after floor mat warning

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -Oct 5, 2009: -- Toyota Motor Corp. today agreed to recall 3.8 million vehicles --just days after the government issued an "urgent" warning to remove driver's side floor mats because of the danger of accidental acceleration... Toyota said in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration late Monday that it was "willing to identify this campaign as a safety recall in the owner communication about the campaign" but the company said it "has not determined that the vehicles ... contain a safety-related defect"... The position was unusual, given the public apology on Friday by Toyota's president, Akio Toyoda, in the wake of the deaths of four people in August linked to a possible incident involving uncontrolled acceleration and a jammed floor mat...
