TRUCKMAKERS PILED UP * India - Big inventories of vehicles

* Tamil Nadu - Daimler India calls the bluff on other truck companies

--- In a rare show of aggression, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV's) CEO tore into a section of truck makers who sought to negate the pollution control measures by trying to interpret laws in their favour. A large section of truck makers sought legal clarifications on the grounds that April 1, 2017 was the cutoff date for manufacture of BS-IV vehicles and not sale date. BS-IV norms spew less pollution from the tail pipes of trucks compared to BS-III. In the run up to the legal verdict, manufacturers piled up inventory of trucks. Supreme Court ordered that from April 1, 2017 no sale of BS-III vehicles would be permitted, thereby forcing manufacturers to dump huge discounts in the market to offload their inventories before the cut-off date...

TRUCKS' FIRE SALE * India: Stocks of 40,000-45,000 unsold BS-III trucks and buses

* New Delhi - BS 3 fire sale: Tata Motors stuck with half of Rs 5400 cr unsold commercial vehicles

--- Despite offering sky-high discounts during the last three days of March the commercial vehicle industry is saddled with stocks of 40,000-45,000 unsold BS-III trucks and buses... Commercial vehicle companies were not as lucky as two-wheeler manufacturers as at least half of their BS-III stock remains unsold which are collectively worth more than Rs 5,400 crore... Despite offering sky-high discounts during the last two days of March the commercial vehicle industry is saddled with stocks of 40,000-45,000 unsold BS-III trucks and buses... Tata Motors, the country’s largest CV maker, is believed to own at least half of that inventory while the balance is shared between Ashok Leyland, VE Commercial Vehicles and Mahindra & Mahindra... When the Supreme Court asked the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers to submit data on unsold BS-III stock it was learnt that there were 97,000 units (equivalent to 1.7 months of sales) valued at Rs 11,600 crore left to be sold...

Daimler ICV * India: Doubling trucks' exports in 2016

* Chennai - Daimler India Commercial Vehicle eyes break even in 2018

--- Daimler India Commercial Vehicle or DICV has managed to hold on to its volumes in 2016 led by doubling of exports even as volumes started to decelerate in the domestic market in the second half of 2016... Five years after starting operations in the country, the Indian subsidiary of the world’s largest medium and heavy truck maker Daimler says it aims to break even operations in India by next year. .. It assumes significance as Daimler India Commercial Vehicle had approached the Indian bankruptcy court in the past after its networth had eroded... In 2016, DICV sold 13,081 BharatBenz trucks registering a degrowth of 7% over almost 14000 trucks it sold in 2015 in India. This development was due to a challenging market, which had turned negative in the second half of 2016 after a good first half. This was compensated by 4500 units of exports, which was double of last year...

Bharat Forge * India: Orders for these trucks fell 23 per cent YoY

* Pune - Bharat Forge faces weak Class 8 Truck order sales in US

--- Bharat Forge, a Pune-based company with interests in heavy vehicles and defence equipment, faces bleak prospects in the US where it sells its Class 8 trucks and earns about a fifth of its revenues. In December 2016, orders inflows for these trucks fell 23 per cent YoY, according to the Freight Transportation Research (FTR)... Order inflows for Class 8 trucks in North America dropped to 21,200 units last December YoY, though there was an increase of 10 per cent when compared to November 2016 due to the seasonality factor, Nomura analysts said in a note on Monday, citing preliminary FTR data... The company's revenues from domestic medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales, which generates about 17 per cent revenues on a standalone basis, are also bleak. Revenues from new business lines comprising railways and aerospace are negligible to offset the main streams of sales...

TRUCKERS' SHORTAGE * India: New comfort for truck drivers

* Delhi - AC trucks set to roll out from 1 April 2017

--- Starting 1 April 2017, drivers of new Indian trucks won’t have to suffer the experience of driving in an open cabin, braving the intense cold of Ladakh or the extreme heat of Rajasthan... The government, has made it mandatory for manufacturers and truck body-builders to fit air-conditioners in the cabin in all new trucks sold from the start of the next financial year. It’s perhaps the first conscious effort made to offer a degree of physical comfort to people engaged in an otherwise punishing profession, carrying cargo year-round in often harsh weather and terrain... India is already reeling under a shortage of truck drivers, which could become a major issue amid expanding interstate highways and the creation of a seamless national market after the proposed introduction next year of the goods and services tax that is expected to make it easier for companies and distributors to ferry industrial inputs and finished goods across states...

TRUCKERS & HIV MIGRATION * India

* Delhi - Can 'Use dipper At Night' catchphrase help drivers curb HIV in India?

--- Drivers indifference towards importance of safe sex leads to the migration of the virus from high prevalence to low prevalence zones... The year was 2002. Prasoon Joshi, current APAC chairman of McCann Worldgroup, was working on an HIV awareness campaign for NACO (National AIDS Control Organisation). Researchers from his team were asking men from Tier II and III towns if they were inclined towards wearing a condom. One respondent told them that he wears a condom everyday but it gets loose by the evening. He didn't know a condom is to be worn during sexual intercourse. And then there's the possibly apocryphal story of a man who after seeing a demonstration of a condom on a banana, apparently covered the fruits with rubbers to stay safe from AIDS... The awareness around the disease and its causes has increased over the years but is still far short of the mark. And one classic 'low-awareness high-risk' category is truck drivers: a highly mobile population who spend their nights and days traversing the roads and highways of the country. And who tend towards promiscuous sexual behaviour...

... As per Dr Munish Chander, head of TCI (Transport Corporation of India) Foundation, HIV prevalence among truckers at 3.2% is higher than the national figure of 0.69%. And so, the foundation keeps trying to educate them on the significance of safe sex...  Similar to its mission is that of Tata Motors one of India's largest truck manufacturers. Over the last few years, the brand has decided to take the issue of AIDS head on. In April, Tata Motors launched a campaign called 'Use Dipper At Night'...  It's a phrase that resonates well with almost every truck driver in the country. But what has a night-driving guideline got to do with safe sex? Well, pretty much everything if you start a condom brand named Dipper, marketed exclusively to truck drivers...

* Delhi - This is what carmakers are doing to tackle this problem

--- The alarming rise in pollution in the capital and areas around it has been a major source of concern for most residents here. The Supreme Court has banned registration of diesel-run cars above 2000cc in NCR till March 31, and then extended it... While almost every major car manufacturer expressed reservations, many are now finding ways to cut back losses while still staying on the right side of law...

PENALTIES for DON'T RECALL * India: From Oct 1

* Delhi - Auto cos who don’t recall vehicles despite having safety defects may face penalties

-- Automobile companies that don't recall vehicles despite having clear evidence of safety defects may face penalties starting October 1, according to rules in the making... Also on the cards is a government-appointed nodal agency that could launch its own investigation into safety issues and even recommend the government to order a recall... India has no mandatory vehicle recall policy, unlike in developed markets like Europe, Japan and the US... Local automakers follow a voluntary code of recall adopted by the industry in July 2012, and have since recalled about 2 million vehicles to fix seat belt tensioners, air bags and problems with brake systems. But transportation experts and consumers rue lack of government norms to make it compulsory for firms to act... The new proposals say the nodal agency shall monitor the recall process and audit the records...
