* Japan - Toyota reaches $1.63 billion deal to settle sudden acceleration claims

Toyota,Aichi,Japan -The Car Connection (USA), by Richard Read -Jul 19, 2013: -- Back in December, we told you that Toyota had offered to fork over $1.1 billion to settle lawsuits over allegations of unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles and a subsequent 2010 recall... About half of that money was meant to fix floormat issues and install brake-override systems, but the other half was earmarked for something entirely different: compensating Toyota and Lexus owners who sold or traded in their vehicles after the recall. Due to the hugely negative publicity surrounding the recall, those owners' vehicles were worth far less than they might've been... Apparently, Toyota was still working out the details of the huge payout. It looks as if Toyota will now spend $757 million compensating customers for sudden depreciation (and paying lawyers, of course), while $875 million will go toward repairing and improving vehicles...

* DC - 2012 BMW 3-Series Recalled For Head Restraint Flaw

(Photo: 2012 BMW 3-Series) Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -May 9, 2012: -- BMW has announced a recall of 3-Series vehicles from the 2012 model year. At the center of that recall is a problem with the front-seat head restraints, which don't meet federal safety standards. In a nutshell, the government mandates that head restraints (or "headrests" as we often call them) allow a maximum downward movement of 25 millimeters, or roughly one inch. That stiffness minimizes the backward motion of occupants' heads during a crash, which helps reduce the occurrence of whiplash and other injuries. But according to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the head restraints in the 2012 BMW 3-Series have an arc of more than 25 millimeters -- at least when they're lifted to their highest positions. And thus, the recall.

Under federal law, only new-car dealers are required to complete recall repairs before vehicles are sold... Used cars and rental cars can be sold or rented without being fixed. Often, buyers or renters don't know there's a problem...
