* Michigan - Chrysler adds '06-'07 Jeep Liberty SUVs to recall list for rust issue

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by Dave Shepardson -June 11, 2012: -- Chrysler Group LLC said Monday it is expanding a recall of its Jeep Liberty SUV to include another 137,000 vehicles to address rust concerns in cold-weather states... In March, Chrysler said it was recalling 209,000 2004-05 Jeep Liberty vehicles that were sold or are currently registered in states where winter streets are salted. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigating whether the recall should be expanded. Chrysler has now agreed to recall the 2006-07 models... In total, Chrysler has now called back 346,000 vehicles to address the issue...


* DC - Feds widen fire probe of Chrysler SUVs to 5 million

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -June 14, 2012: -- Federal safety investigators are expanding a government probe into whether fuel tanks in 5 million Chrysler SUVs pose a serious fire risk... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation — opened in August 2010 to look at 3 million 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees — has been expanded to cover more than 5 million vehicles, including the 1993-2001 Jeep Cherokee and 2002-07 Jeep Liberty... In its notice, NHTSA also said it was upgrading its preliminary investigation to an engineering analysis. At the conclusion of its analysis, the agency can demand an automaker recall unsafe vehicles or close it without taking any action...


* DC - Three rental car firms balk at repair 'pledge'. Only Hertz agrees not to rent or sell vehicles under recall 

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -June 13, 2012: -- Three of the nation's four major rental car companies won't agree to a blanket pledge to not rent or sell unrepaired or recalled vehicles, safety advocates said Tuesday...  Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said only Hertz Global Holdings Inc., with 8,500 locations in 150 countries, agreed to the pledge. She urged the other three major companies — Enterprise Holdings Inc., Avis Budget Group Inc. and Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. — to follow suit. The four companies together control 92 percent of the rental car market...  Enterprise Holdings, parent company to Enterprise, National and Alamo, wants an exemption to rent some unrepaired vehicles if customers receive a notice first. Last month, Enterprise said it would stop renting unrepaired recalled vehicles. Thomas Laffey, Enterprise's general counsel, says a law should allow rental companies to rent vehicles that have minor issues. His letter noted a recent minivan recall in which vehicles had the wrong door sticker specifying maximum loads... Last July, Boxer and Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., introduced legislation to prohibit companies from renting or selling vehicles that are under recall...
