* DC / USA - Feds widen fire probe of Chrysler SUVs to 5.1 million

Chrysler is adding more than 137,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs to a safety recall announced in March, extending the recall to 2006 and 2007 model years from the previous recall of model years 2004 and 2005) Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -June 15, 2012: -- Federal safety investigators are expanding a government probe into whether fuel tanks in 5 million Chrysler SUVs pose a serious fire risk... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation, opened in August 2010 to look at 3 million 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees, has been expanded to cover 5.1 million vehicles, including the 1993-2001 Jeep Cherokee and 2002-07 Jeep Liberty... In its notice, NHTSA said it was upgrading its preliminary investigation to an engineering analysis. At the conclusion of its analysis, the agency can demand a recall, if it determines vehicles are unsafe... NHTSA says it has reports of 15 deaths and 46 injuries from rear-impact crashes linked to 26 fires from fuel tanks...
* DC / USA - Feds expand Toyota fire probe to 1.4M autos
Washington,DC,USA -Associated Press/The Detroit News -18 June 2012: -- The government has added 600,000 Toyota Camrys and other vehicles to an investigation of fires in power window switches. The probe now includes more than 1.4 million cars and SUVs... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that the probe now covers certain Camrys from the 2008 and 2009 model years. The investigation began in February with 2007 Camrys and RAV4 SUVs... The safety agency says power window switches in the driver's side doors can overheat and catch fire. So far, the problem has caused 161 fires and nine injuries. The vehicles have not been recalled... The Camry is the top-selling car in the U.S...

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News Bureau, by David Shepardson -June 16, 2012: -- Federal investigators are upgrading an investigation into more than 340,000 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUVs over electrical fires sparked in driver doors... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is upgrading its investigation into the General Motors Co. vehicles over the driver's-side power master switch. NHTSA has reports of 28 door fires linked to the problem... Some of the fires allegedly happened when the vehicle was not running and unattended... Labels: autos' recalls
