(Photo: 83,000 solo women in trucking in the U.S.A.) Washington,D.C.,USA -Truck News -Jun 13, 2012:  --  Driver turnover among US truckload fleets pushed higher in the first quarter, according to the American Trucking Associations... Small truckload fleets, with revenue of less than $30 million per year, saw their turnover rates surge 16% to 71% in the first quarter, reaching their highest level since the second quarter of 2008... Large truckload fleets saw a small increase in driver turnover to 90%, its highest rate since the first quarter of 2008... Turnover among LTL fleets remained at a “remarkably low” 8%, the ATA reported...

* Michigan - Washington and the drive for greater freight efficiency

Dearborn,MICH,USA -Automotive World/Global Policy Group, by Ian C. Graig -June 12, 2012: -- The US commercial vehicle (CV) industry is in the midst of far-reaching changes, driven by rapid technology development, shifting customer demands, the ongoing transformation of the US energy mix, and policies implemented in Washington. Those policies, while by no means the sole or even dominant drivers of change in the industry, nonetheless play an important role in the ongoing drive for greater freight efficiency... Federal rules are also helping to drive advances in CV safety. A recent proposal from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) creates a new federal motor vehicle safety standard that would require electronic stability control (ESC) systems on commercial truck tractors and certain buses with a gvw rating of 26,000 lbs or more. Federal regulators chose to mandate use of ESC technologies rather than roll stability control (RSC) systems in hopes of reducing loss-of-control crashes that result from severe under- or over-steering. While some commercial fleet operators already use ESC systems, the proposed rule could lead to broader adoption of this technology. NHTSA is now taking comments on its notice of proposed rulemaking, which has been generally well received...

* Michigan - Educating drivers cuts fleet costs

Dearborn,MICH,USA -AutomotiveWorld, by Ruth Dawson -June 13, 2012: -- Timothy Tindall, Director of component sales at Daimler, has today provided an emphatic stance on how powertrains can be developed for effective cost of operation through better education... Addressing the audience of Automotive World's Commercial Vehicles Megatrends USA 2012, Tindall told delegates how educating drivers can minimise the total cost of operation of a fleet vehicle... Daimler recently introduced an iPad app for dealership salesmen to use, allowing customers to order exact truck specifications, thus producing a more fuel efficient vehicle for its intended purpose... The Daimler view is one of integration: by using powertrain and drivetrain technologies more efficiently - and merging the manufacturing and servicing processes into more streamlined runs - vehicle efficiency in terms of fuel, downtime and driver management can be improved...

* Michigan - Great drivers improve hybrid technology

Dearborn,MICH,USA -AutomotiveWorld, by Ruth Dawson -June 13, 2012: -- In a presentation entitled 'Powertrain technology - a commercial view' at Automotive World's Commercial Vehicle Megatrends USA 2012 conference, Nandu Srinivasan, Director of Engineering at Eaton, outlined the company's position in the commercial vehicle business, emphasising their new focus on hybrid technology. Having announced a number of enhancements to increase fuel economy in commercial vehicles, hybrid, it seems, is at the forefront of Eaton's current business plans...  The goal is to allow fleet owners to extend the life of hybrid units at a lower cost than new service units...  Srinivasan cited NACFE figures, showing that a disproportionate 40-41% of long haul vehicles account for 75% of truck fuel consumption. Speaking of downspeeding and new powertrain efficiency technologies, Srinivasan further said: "For every 100 rpm in speed...you could gain about 3% fuel economy"... Looking to the future, Srinivasan said that Eaton's challenge would be turning today's average drivers into great drivers..."How do we make every driver a great driver? That is our challenge"...Better driving allows for a larger (4%) margin of fuel efficiency, according to Eaton's statistics. Thus driver education and the use of better technologies go hand in hand to making the driver as efficient as the vehicle will allow...
