* USA - Michigan, Canada to Build New Detroit Bridge

The New International Trade Crossing will join the existing Ambassador Bridge that currently connects the two cities... The new $2.1 billion bridge will be designed, built, operated and maintained by Canada... Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said the project will be built at no cost to the state... Currently, one-fourth of the truck commerce between the U.S. and Canada crosses over the Ambassador Bridge...


* Canberra /Australia - New Report endorses trucks rest areas program 

Canberra,ACT,Australia -ATA Friday Facts -15 June 2012:  --  A new report has endorsed the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP), which funds truck rest areas and productivity measures... The Government spent $70 million on the program from 2008-09 to 2011-12 to fund 236 projects, which included truck rest areas on the Newell and Sturt highways, decoupling bays on the North West Coastal Highway in WA and at Nhill in Victoria, and bridge strengthening on the Monaro Highway in the ACT... The Government announced in the May Budget that it will spend an extra $140 million on the program from 2012-13 to 2018-19, reflecting one of the ATA’s strategic priorities... 


* Queensland /Australia - Road to the past

Sapphire,Brisbane,QLD,Australia -ATA Friday Facts -15 June 2012:  --  Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, confirmed on Thursday that a timber structure unearthed by workers rebuilding the Pacific Highway is the remnants of an old road. Uncovered between Sapphire and Woolgoolga, the road is thought to have been built early last century using a technique dating back to as early as 4,000BC... The old timber structure runs parallel to and within 10 metres of the existing Woolgoolga Creek Road... NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay said to determine its heritage value Ainsworth Heritage was contracted to carry out an archaeological survey of the discovery and make recommendations for its removal to a suitable permanent location...
