* Prince Edward Islands - Trucking industry wants more women behind the wheel

--- Industry facing a shortage of 30,000 by 2020 nationwide... The Island's trucking industry is facing a major shortage of workers, and officials hope women will step up to help fill the gap... According to the P.E.I. Trucking Sector Council, truckers are aging and many are set to retire in the next several years... Executive director Brian Oulton says approximately 30,000 truck drivers are needed nationwide by 2020, several hundred on Prince Edward Island.... Jobs 'everywhere' on the Island... Oulton said many trucking jobs on the Island go unfilled, and getting more women behind the wheel would make a big difference...

WOMEN IN TRUCKING * Canada: Trucker isn't just a "man's world."

* Quebec - Trucking industry faces labour shortage as it struggles to attract young drivers


--- One of the oldest workforces in Canada is facing a looming driver shortage that could reach 48,000 drivers by 2024... After 40 years as a truck driver, Jack Fielding says it’s easier to name the places in North America where he hasn’t been than the ones he has... And after driving five million kilometres, the 57 year-old still enjoys the freedom of the road... But as Fielding and thousands like him near retirement age, the industry is struggling to recruit young people who share his enthusiasm for the job... The average age of a truck driver is over 47 — up from 45 in 2013 — and almost 30 per cent of the driving force is 55 or over, which makes it one of the oldest workforces in Canada, according to the organization’s president... Fielding, for example, usually works 10-14 days straight, with three days off between trips. Schedules are not set in advance, and drivers often work 12 hours or more a day... She says that while the first women “pioneers” may have been given a hard time, the industry has become very welcoming to women... The average salary for a truck driver was listed as $40,728 in 2011, although Bradley says long-haul truck drivers can easily make $70-80,000 a year... The industry is working to change the classification of truck driving to semi-skilled or skilled, which Canadian Trucking Alliance's president, Bradley says is key to getting more resources for training and attracting career-oriented candidates... Fielding, who estimates he has five years of driving left, can’t quite figure out why more young people don’t seem to want to take over behind the wheel. “Where (else) can you get paid to see North America, to experience things in life?” he says. “I think it would be a great job for somebody just starting out.” ...

"TRUCK WORLD" SHOW * Canada: 18,800 visitors this year

* Ontario - "Truck World" breaks attendance records

--- "Truck World", the largest trade show serving Canada’s trucking industry, attracted 18,820 people this year – breaking several records in the process... There were 14,862 visitors who walked through the halls of Toronto’s International Centre from April 14 to 16, interacting with 3,958 exhibitor representatives in more than 400 booths... The show also saw a noticeable increase in attendees from Canada’s South Asian community, in a year when a new relationship was forged with JGK Media. The company’s Desi Trucking magazine was named the show’s official South Asian Media Partner... International Truck and Engine Corporation was the event’s platinum sponsor, while Shell and Manac were the gold sponsors. -- The Canadian trucking industry is facing a “bumpy” 2016 as a weak economy and too much capacity weigh on freight rates, according to a new analysis from RBC Capital Markets... RBC analyst Walter Spracklin said, The trucking industry is facing many of the same difficulties as railroads, which are also coping with shrinking freight volumes and pricing pressure. However, trucking has the additional challenge of excess capacity, which has remained at elevated levels due to low fuel prices...

Saskatchewan,CAN -CBC News -May 28, 2014: -- There are more pickup trucks than ever on the roads in Saskatchewan and there is a perception that those drivers are too aggressive... For some, the perception comes from the sheer size of some trucks... Figures from Statistics Canada show that trucks, and other large vehicles (including vans and SUVs), accounted for 78 per cent of new vehicle sales in Saskatchewan in 2013. Passenger cars made up the other 22 per cent... SGI, Saskatchewan auto insurance provider, keeps track of reported accidents... According to data from 2012, trucks made up 21 per cent of all registered vehicles in Saskatchewan and accounted for 24 per cent of collisions... No matter what one drives, Saskatchewan is set to increase fines for speeders and distracted drivers, on June 27...

Berwick,N.S,CAN -CBC News, by Susana Mas, and Paul Palmeter -May 09, 2014: -- The federal government has sanctioned a fourth employer that was using the Temporary Foreign Worker Program pending an investigation into the company's requests for Labour Market Opinions, which are required to prove the need to hire a temporary foreign worker over a Canadian... The owners of Eassons Transport in Berwick, N.S., saw its permits to hire workers through the program suspended on May 1, according to a notice quietly posted on the web site for Employment and Social Development Canada... Employment Minister Jason Kenney said, he intends to give Service Canada further audit powers to ensure employers stick to the rules... While the minister was not available for comment, a spokesperson in the department of Employment and Social Development Canada told CBC News in an email Thursday that "any allegation of abuse of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program will be vigorously investigated" ... Paul Easson doesn't think his company has broken the rules...

Ottawa,ONT,CAN -Truck News -Apr 30, 2013: -- An electronic onboard recorder (EOBR) mandate in Canada could be the “game-changer” that finally forces forcing some carriers to deal with driver issues, according to the CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force... “An EOBR mandate, if enforced, would not only enhance highway safety through improved compliance with the hours of service regulations, it would also force more carriers to deal with driver issues” ... The BTRF comprises 11 CTA board members from across Canada... “When everyone is required to use an EOBR, all carriers will have to deal with their customers and will have the data to show where drivers are being delayed and for how long. The onus will be on all carriers to manage their businesses. In particular, those that overlook or depend on drivers to manipulate their logbooks to make their deliveries or to get their miles in will have to change their business practices. It is hoped that in the future all carriers will compete more on the basis of efficiency and value added service, as opposed to service levels artificially created by drivers over-extending themselves with regard to hours of service” ... The Conference Board of Canada study, highlighted the need for improved wages and working conditions as well as a reorganization of trucking activity and supply chains in order to reduce pressures on long haul truck drivers and make better use of their time...


 * Ontario - MTO gives 18-month extension for transition to new safety standard

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News -May 1, 2013: -- The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has extended the transition period for carriers to comply with National Safety Code Standard 11B "Periodic Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections" until Jan. 1, 2015, the Ontario Trucking Association has learned. The extended transition has been provided because of revisions to the existing standard currently underway... Ontario was scheduled to implement the existing national standard (2006 version) by July 1. However, since there are revisions being made to the national standard, the MTO has determined it makes more sense to wait for the standard to be updated rather than to introduce the 2006 version, and then follow up with the updated version in such a short period of time...

* Report: Rising costs to mute profits for transportation sector in 2011

Ottawa,ONT,CAN -Truck News -24 Nov 2011: -- Rising labour and operating costs will lower profits to less than $5 billion for the transportation and warehousing sector this year, according to the Canadian Industrial Profile's Autumn 2011 issue... The report is published by The Conference Board of Canada in association with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). It provides a five-year (2011-2015) production, revenue, cost and profitability forecast for six industries each quarter... The report noted that while the industry as a whole has recovered from the recession, the rebound varies among the different modes of transport. The trucking, air transportation and rail segments have posted strong growth, and the pipeline transportation segment is forecast to record its first increase in output in five years. However, the ongoing economic weakness in the US is limiting demand for water transportation services...

Late last month, Rexton-based Warren Transport said it would be merging general freight operations and equipment repair facilities with the entire operations of D.D. Transport Ltd. of Mount Pearl, N.L. to form Atlantica Diversified Transportation Systems, effective April... The same week, employees at the Fredericton head office of Sunbury Transport - an Irving Transportation Services company - were told Sunbury Transport's operations would be merged with sister company RST Transport in Saint John by the summer... Shane Esson of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, said the trend toward consolidation - and closure among less competitive firms - is the same across North America... * USA - Trucking failures to accelerate this year

New York,NY,USA -Reuters/Money Control (India) -Feb 19, 2010: -- Bankruptcies in the US trucking industry are expected to escalate this year as higher fuel prices and excess capacity squeeze margins further and lenders start to tighten their noose on the sector... The highly fragmented freight market in the United States has been in recession for about three years now. Excess capacity has put pressure on pricing and dented margins at truckers as well as freight brokers... But the sector has not seen as many insolvencies as expected in the last two years, as lenders wait for the market to improve for the used trucks they hold as collateral... Industry analysts say a spike in bankruptcies might not be a bad thing after all for the sector -- it will take away hundreds of underperforming companies, suck out the excess capacity and finally narrow the gap between supply and demand... Trucking failures are not the only way for excess capacity to leave the market. Some analysts believe mergers and acquisitions could start to see an upside as distressed deals happen and the larger players prepare for a recovery in 2011...

The top 97 for-hire carriers generated operating revenue of $2.6 billion and operating expenses of $2.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -11 May 2009: --... For these carriers (those earning $25 million or more annually), operating revenue and expenses remained practically unchanged from the previous year, reports Stats Canada... The operating ratio remained at 0.95, unchanged in the fourth quarter compared with the same quarter a year earlier. A ratio greater than 1.00 represents an operating loss... The revenues and expenses attributed to top carriers may also include that of some companies with less than $25 million in annual revenue, particularly when these companies exist in complex corporate structures where their individual activities may be difficult to accurately measure... Statistics Canada has announced this will be the final release of top carriers data from the Quarterly Motor Carriers of Freight Survey. Following release of the fourth quarter 2008 all carriers data around the end of May, the Quarterly Motor Carriers of Freight Survey will be discontinued... * U.S.-Canada Trade Falls - Large broker reports deep losses; border crossings see less traffic

Ottawa,ONT,CAN -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Courtney Tower -May 12, 2009: -- Canada’s largest customs broker, with 2,500 employees located across Canada and the United States, on Tuesday reported deep losses and stopped distributing dividends, mainly because of falling trade between the two countries... The announcement by Livingston International Income Fund followed a pattern also recorded Tuesday by Statistics Canada, the national statistical agency, showing a significant fall in exports and imports between the U.S. and Canada in March and during the first quarter this year.These are seen as well in cross-border commercial traffic recorded in both periods by operators of four of the six biggest U.S.-Canada border crossings... Montreal,Que,CAN -Transportation & Logistics -12 March 2009: -- TransForce reported a profit of $14.8 million for the fourth quarter of 2008 and $79.7 million for the year, up significantly from the previous year... The company posted a $30.9 million loss in the fourth quarter of 2007 and net income of $44.8 million for all of 07. Revenue was up 10% to $544.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2008, the company reported, attributing the increase to acquisitions including Groupe Thibodeau...


* Diversification drives profit for Trimac

Calgary,Albta,CAN -Transportation & Logistics -13 March 2009: -- Trimac has credited its “diversification by customer, industry, product and geography” with its ability to post a profit in a challenging operating environment... The company’s fourth quarter profit of $3 million was up from $2.2 million the year before but its full year profit of $13.8 million was down from $17.4 million in 2007. Revenue was down 1.2% on the year and 1.5% for the fourth quarter, the company reported...

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News -2 Dec 2008: -- Ontario has announced it will immediately begin requiring commercial vehicle operators to renew their CVORs every year...   The Ministry of Transportation says this will better allow the province to monitor trucking companies’ safety performances, according to a release...   The province is establishing an education program to help communicate the new requirements for trucking companies. About 5,000 new companies will be required to complete the program each year, the province announced...


* CTA seeks weight, length concessions

ONT,CAN -Land Line Magazine -December 1, 2008: -- The Canadian Trucking Alliance is asking for weight and length variances on trucks with certain anti-idling or aerodynamic devices...   Truck News reported that the CTA has asked federal officials for an extra 1,000-pound allowance to cover APUs, trailer skirts and moose bumpers...   It’s also seeking a length variance for boat tails...
