The top 97 for-hire carriers generated operating revenue of $2.6 billion and operating expenses of $2.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008
Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -11 May 2009: --... For these carriers (those earning $25 million or more annually), operating revenue and expenses remained practically unchanged from the previous year, reports Stats Canada... The operating ratio remained at 0.95, unchanged in the fourth quarter compared with the same quarter a year earlier. A ratio greater than 1.00 represents an operating loss... The revenues and expenses attributed to top carriers may also include that of some companies with less than $25 million in annual revenue, particularly when these companies exist in complex corporate structures where their individual activities may be difficult to accurately measure... Statistics Canada has announced this will be the final release of top carriers data from the Quarterly Motor Carriers of Freight Survey. Following release of the fourth quarter 2008 all carriers data around the end of May, the Quarterly Motor Carriers of Freight Survey will be discontinued... * U.S.-Canada Trade Falls - Large broker reports deep losses; border crossings see less traffic
Ottawa,ONT,CAN -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Courtney Tower -May 12, 2009: -- Canada’s largest customs broker, with 2,500 employees located across Canada and the United States, on Tuesday reported deep losses and stopped distributing dividends, mainly because of falling trade between the two countries... The announcement by Livingston International Income Fund followed a pattern also recorded Tuesday by Statistics Canada, the national statistical agency, showing a significant fall in exports and imports between the U.S. and Canada in March and during the first quarter this year.These are seen as well in cross-border commercial traffic recorded in both periods by operators of four of the six biggest U.S.-Canada border crossings... The report by the Public Border Operators Association, on Ontario border crossings with New York and Michigan, covers four of the six busiest U.S.-Canada border crossings. The second busiest, the Blue Water Bridge, was down 24.15 percent for the first four months versus the 2008 period, and the two others were down 17.4 percent and 21.4 percent... * USA - UPS Sells Mail Boxes International. Package carrier retains stores in U.S., Canada, India
Sandy Springs,GA,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Thomas L. Gallagher -May 12, 2009: -- UPS sold the international network of Mail Boxes Etc. to Italy’s Fineffe Group... The move gives the Italian holding company the master license agreements for 1,227 locations in more than 30 countries. But UPS will retain ownership of San Diego-based MBE, including The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. brands in the United States, Canada and India, where there are approximately 4,800 independently owned and operated locations... The global agreement also provides for UPS to continue as the preferred carrier for express services offered at the international retail stores...
