* NSW - Disagreement over speeding trucks

Sydney,NSW,Australia -Transport and Logistic News, by Charles Pauka -November 8, 2012: -- Whilst an Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) study has found that a small number of repeat offenders, mostly from out of state, were responsible for a large proportion of the heavy truck speeding offences in NSW, local residents believe the problem is endemic... The study said the best way for NSW to tackle the problem was to improve detection measures on regional highways at night. Many trucks were clocked travelling more than 30 km/h over the limit... When a vehicle was caught speeding by more than 15 km/h three times in three years, its registration was suspended for 28 days. Out-of-state vehicles had their NSW driving privileges suspended. For four strikes, the suspension jumped to three months... According to the study, 10,363 vehicles scored one strike, 1322 a second strike, 294 a third and 128 a fourth strike... Information from across Australia suggest more than a quarter of big trucks exceed the speed limit, though most by not more than 10 km/h. Risk factors include delivery deadlines and competition within the industry, driving culture, with some drivers regarding fines as a cost of doing business, and workplace culture — some companies enforce safe driving practices more than others...
