* Record-breaking heavy haul load en route in Manitoba

Manitoba, Canada -Land Line Magazine -6 Nov 2012: -- The heaviest loads ever hauled on provincial highways began a 90-mile trip in Manitoba on Sunday night, Nov. 4... Three 193-ton electrical transformers valued at more than $5 million each are being moved – in three trips – from the plant where they were made to a power substation outside Winnipeg... The self-propelled modular trailer that’s moving them is 111 feet long and has 20 axles and 320 tires. It moves only at night and goes about 3 mph. The trailer is similar to the unit used to move the space shuttle Endeavour through the streets of Los Angeles...


* Arkansas / USA - Voters Approve Half-Cent Tax for Highway Improvements 

Little Rock,ARK,USA -Transport Topics, by Michele Fuetsch -7 Nov 2012: -- Arkansas voters approved a measure to add a half-cent to the state’s 6-cent sales tax to pay for the widening of a dozen state highways and for major improvements on several others... Passage of the road-tax measure — marking the first time that Arkansas will spend sales tax money on highway infrastructure — was a welcome surprise, said Lane Kidd, president of the Arkansas Trucking Association... About 58% of voters approved the measure, the (Fort Smith, Ark.) City Wire reported on its website. Cities and counties will each receive 15% of revenue under the program, estimated to be about $670 million, the paper said... At the state level, the new revenue will allow Arkansas to sell $1.3 billion worth of bonds in order to launch the highway widening projects...
