* DC - Report: USPS Could Save $100 Million Annually by Going Intermodal

Washington,D.C.,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Mark Szakonyi -Jul 17, 2012: -- The ailing U.S. Postal Service could save roughly $100 million annually by shifting more mail shipments from the highways to the rails, according to a report by its inspector general... Despite an early history of transporting mail via trains, the USPS spent only $40 million on freight rail contracts last year, compared to more than $3.3 billion in truck contracts. Its main competitors, FedEx and UPS, have become “major users of freight rail in the last decade,” and J.B. Hunt, a major USPS trucking contractor, gets 80 percent of its revenue from intermodal operations, according to a report released Tuesday... USPS lost $3.2 billion in the fiscal second quarter and expects to lose $83.2 billion by 2016 if Congress does not allow the agency to make needed reforms. Costly health benefits and adjustments for worker’s compensation, along with declining mail volume, have squeezed USPS in recent years...
* DC - OOIDA Sues FMCSA Over Driver Database
Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine -7 July 2012: -- The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said Monday it has filed suit against the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regarding FMCSA’s pre-employment screening program and appeal process... The suit — filed in the U.S District Court for the District of Columbia — alleges that FMCSA releases records of alleged safety violations to potential employers before drivers have had their day in court and that it refuses to delete references to such violations even after drivers have been exonerated in court... Three plaintiffs named in the lawsuit were cited for alleged violations during the course of routine inspections. All three drivers challenged the citations in court and were either acquitted of the violations or had their cases dismissed, OOIDA said... The suit alleges the agency fails to comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, with the Privacy Act, and with mandates governing agency action contained in the previous highway bill, SAFETEA-LU... An FMCSA spokeswoman said the agency is aware of the lawsuit filed and that the matter action is currently under agency review...
* DC - FMCSA Shuts Down Alabama ‘Chameleon’ Carrier
Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -16 July 2012: -- Federal officials ordered an Alabama-based carrier shut down, saying it is an “imminent hazard to the public,” and a “reincarnation” of a carrier that was shut down in May... The shutdown order of MTI Transportation followed an earlier one to BM& and L Trucking, which the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said in May had violated hours-of-service, driver qualifications and vehicle maintenance rule... FMCSA found that BM and L’s owner created a new carrier, as MTI had the same business location, phone number, drivers, officers, vehicles, customers and insurance as BM and L...
* Maryland - SHA helps truckers go paperless with E-Hauling permits
Baltimore,MD,USA -SHA (PR)-July 17, 2012: -- This month Maryland becomes the first State on the eastern seaboard, and the second in the nation to issue electronic hauling permits for the trucking industry. The Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) is now providing truckers a way to carry paperless permits – to be displayed in electronic format during inspections, replacing traditional paper-issued permits and attachments... SHA’s Motor Carrier Division manages and permits approximately 160,000 over sized moves each year and issues approximately 600-800 permits each day. Helping SHA conserve natural resources and reduce its overall carbon footprint, e-permits can potentially save the printing of nearly 50,000 pieces of paper each month. This is another environmentally-friendly business practice that reduces waste in support of the State’s green initiatives... Maryland enforcement agencies have the ability to access the Automated Hauling Permit System (AHPS) to validate application submissions against log books to verify travel start times...
