* Germany - BMW Adds X1 Production in China

The ’13 model comes from two sources: BMW’s Leipzig, Germany, assembly plant and the Tiexi, China, facility where the German auto maker and its joint-venture partner...


* Italy - Fiat 500 gets a big sister 

Turin,Italy -Fleet Europe (Belgium), by Tim Harrup -10 July 2012: -- A new version of the Fiat 500, under the name of ‘500L’ has just been announced by the Italian manufacturer. The car is a four door version of the iconic model, and the ‘L’ refers to its space functionality, lightness and ‘loft-style’ conception. Fiat hopes to attract customers who are fans of the model but need more room for children or friends and their luggage. The Fiat 500L is 4.14 metres long, which is around 60 cm longer than the existing model...



* USA - Chrysler Idles 3.7L V-6 Production at Mack Engine Plant

Auburn Hills,MICH,UDA -WardsAuto -Jul. 17, 2012: -- The auto maker is continuing to phase out older powertrains in favor of its award-winning Pentastar engines...  Chrysler is halting output at its Mack Engine Plant II in Detroit, where the auto maker currently builds the outgoing 3.7L V-6 engine... The Pentastar V-6 is in line to replace six of the auto maker’s V-6 engines through 2014... Chrysler is looking to reassign the more than 200 workers affected by Mack II shutdown ... The plant, which opened in 2000, is expected to idle in September, Chrysler says...

* Australia - Ford Slashing Production 29%, Laying Off 440

Campbellfield,VIC,Australia -WardsAuto (USA), by Alan Harman -Jul. 17, 2012: -- Ford Australia, its sales languishing in a record market, is cutting production 29% and laying off 440 workers... President and CEO, Bob Graziano says, the reductions are difficult but necessary to provide the auto maker with more stability and certainty by more closely aligning production with market demand...

* Canada - Ford to cut labor costs at Canada sites 

Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -July 18, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co. says it will have to work with the Canadian Auto Workers to find a way to reduce labor costs in Canada so it can ensure its factories there are considered for future products... According to Ford, the base wage for its 4,500 assembly workers at three factories in Canada is $34 an hour, compared with $28 an hour in the United States. For years, the gap has been masked by favorable currency exchange rates and legacy health care costs that no longer apply...

* USA - 2012 Porsche Cayenne, 2011-2012 Porsche Panamera Recalled

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -Jul 17, 2012: -- Porsche has issued a recall for turbocharged models of the 2012 Cayenne crossover and the 2011-2012 Panamera sedan. According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a turbine wheel on those vehicles' turbochargers may have been improperly cast. As a result, it could fracture, which would diminish performance. In certain cases, the fractured turbine wheel could also lead to a fracturing of the turbine shaft. That, in turn, could pull oil into the exhaust system, where it would have the potential to smoke and catch fire...  The recall affects just 270 vehicles...
