* New York - Study Links Risky Driving Behaviors to Heightened Mortality, On and Off the Road

New York,NY,USA -The New York Times, by TANYA MOHN -July 12, 2012: ... A record of risky driving correlates strongly to heightened general mortality, according to a report released this week. The study, “More Than Just Data: Motor Vehicle Records as Lifestyle Indicators for Life Insurers,” was completed jointly by LexisNexis Risk Solutions and RGA Reinsurance Company, and found a significant connection between motorists who were cited for serious driving violations and the likelihood that those motorists might die in a nonvehicular death... More than 7.4 million randomly selected motor vehicle records were analyzed, from which about 73,000 deaths were identified nationwide. The data were normalized to account for any under-reporting of deaths. Individual reports were segmented based on clean records, minor violations or major violations... Among the key findings, a high number of major driving violations indicated that a motorist would have a higher mortality rate from all causes than motorists with clean records. People with major violations like drug-related infractions, excessive speeding and reckless or negligent driving on average had about a 70 percent higher chance of dying in a nonvehicular manner than those who did not. Having just one major violation on a motor vehicle report elevated the overall mortality of an individual by 51 percent, and people with with six or more violations experienced about 80 percent higher mortality rates. The trends were consistent across all age groups and genders...
