* Manufacturers turn to Russia
Moscow,Russia -Fleet Europe (Belgium), by Tim Harrup -2 July 2012: -- Russia has been much in the news where the automotive world is concerned over recent days. Firstly, autoactu.com, has reported that Daimler is to begin a cooperation agreement with Russian manufacturer GAZ to build the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter LUV in the GAZ factory at Nijny Novgorod... Daimler has invested 100 million Euro for this, in particular to ensure that engines and other parts for the Sprinter can be produced locally. GAZ is to invest almost as much... On top of this, and reported this time by Automotive News Europe, GM is also planning to be active in Russia. The start of works on an extension to its St.-Petersburg factory has initiated a process which will eventually see production more than doubled to 230,000 vehicles a year by 2015. GM plans to build the Opel Astra and certain Chevrolet models in the factory, and to take advantage of the fast growing local market in order to offset falling sales in Western Europe (in a declining market). GM (all brands together) sold around a quarter of a million vehicles in Russia last year, and the overall market is expected to top 3 million vehicles this year, with GM aiming for more than a 10% share...
