* China - Automakers look overseas as local slowdown pinches
Hangzhou,China -Reuters -May 11, 2012: -- Ramped-up capacity by Chinese automakers during the heady days of 30-50 percent annual growth has bumped headlong into a domestic slowdown, and now indigenous firms are seeking buyers in far-flung corners of the world, from Egypt to Ukraine to Indonesia... With Western markets still out of reach, China's domestic automakers are staking their export push on the same formula that's worked for them at home: no frills but acceptable quality... Indeed, for many domestic automakers, relying solely on the China market is no longer an option...
* UK - Mercedes targets food and retail deliveries with new truck
Tunbridge Wells,EN,UK -Logistics Manager -10 May 2012: -- Mercedes-Benz is to target the heavy-duty short-radius distribution market with a new truck, the Antos. The company believes the key market for the truck will be regional transport of commodities such as food and other retail products... The Antos has a 2.30-metre wide cab. Trucks are available in either short or medium-size versions. They are available as either platform trucks or tractor units with a range of 67 wheelbase lengths, varying from 2650 mm at one end of the scale to 6700 mm at the other. The trucks use Mercedes’ new generation of Euro 6 engines with power ratings from 238hp to 510hp. There is a fully automated PowerShift transmission. * Japan - Isuzu not discussing equity ties with GM
Tokyo,Japan -Reuters -May 10, 2012: -- The head of Isuzu Motors Ltd said on Thursday the Japanese truck maker was not discussing forming an equity alliance with former top shareholder General Motors Co, dismissing reports that such talks were taking place... A source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters last week that GM proposed taking a controlling stake of more than one-third in its former affiliate as it seeks growth in Isuzu's stronghold of Southeast Asia, and then suggested a smaller holding after the truck maker indicated its desire for independence. Japanese business daily Nikkei reported GM was now seeking a stake of about 10 percent...
* Thailand - Hino unit launches ligh.t-duty truck
Bangkok,Thailand -The Bangkok Post -11 May 2012: -- Hino Motors, a Toyota subsidiary, hopes to become the market leader in the competitive Thai truck market after launching new light-duty truck models... Hino commands over a 50% share in the heavy-duty truck segment, but still trails its rival in the light-duty truck market... The new model Series 3 Expert was introduced yesterday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hino's operations in Thailand... Demand for all categories of trucks excluding pickups is projected to grow 65% year-on-year to 36,500 units... Of the total, 7,600 units will be light-duty trucks with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of between four to eight tonnes, and 28,900 units will be heavy-duty trucks with GVW of nine to 50.5 tonnes...
