* Michigan - Ford to boost output by curbing shutdowns; others look to add shifts

Wayne,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -May 9, 2012: -- A second U.S. automaker is cutting back on summer shutdowns, the latest sign of growing optimism about 2012 auto sales... At the same time, foreign automakers have been adding shifts and boosting production at North American plants, as they predict sharply improved sales this year... Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday it will produce nearly 40,000 more vehicles this summer by reducing its summer shutdown to just one week, instead of the traditional two, at 13 plants — including six assembly plants. Five of those plants are in Michigan, and another is in Windsor...
* DC - Chrysler recalls 300s, Dodge Chargers for electrical issue

The recall covers 119,072 vehicles from the 2011-2012 model years... A plastic insert surrounding a fuse may be subject to distortion caused by thermal expansion and contraction, Chrysler said...
* California - Toyota plans to limit sales of all-electric RAV4
- Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday it plans to sell just 2,600 RAV4 electric vehicles over the next three years, as automakers take an increasingly cautious approach to the electric vehicle market. By contrast, Toyota sells about 15,000 gas-powered RAV4s every month in the U.S. - its best-selling SUV. Toyota said the all-electric SUV has an expected driving range rating of approximately 100 miles and charging time of approximately six hours... Read more

* Indiana - Lugar loses GOP primary in Indiana
- The man who fought Chrysler in 2009 and nearly blocked its quick exit from bankruptcy toppled a six-term senator in Indiana. Indiana State Treasurer, Richard Mourdock, defeated veteran Indiana Sen., Richard Lugar, in a bitter challenge from the Republican Party in primary voting Tuesday... Read more
* Ohio - Despite opposing bailout, Romney says he deserves credit for auto industry comeback
- Campaigning in the backyard of America's auto industry, Mitt Romney re-ignited the bailout debate by suggesting he deserves "a lot of credit" for the recent successes of the nation's largest car companies. That claims comes in spite of his stance that Detroit should have been allowed to go bankrupt. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee told a Cleveland television station on Monday that President, Barack Obama, followed his lead when he ushered auto companies through a managed bankruptcy soon after taking office... * Michigan - Ford Motor Co. will triple its production of EcoBoost-powered cars in Europe
- Ford M.C. announced Wednesday, that by 2015, will triple its production of EcoBoost-powered cars in Europe. The automaker also announced plans to double the number of models offering EcoBoost engines to 10 over the same period.
* Tennessee - Nissan breaks ground on Tennessee engine plant
- Nissan broke ground Wednesday on an engine plant in Decherd, Tenn., 80 miles southeast of Nashville. The plant will assemble engines for Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti models when production likely begins in 2014. The number of employees has not been announced.
