* DC - Trucking returns to job growth in April
Washington,DC,USA -CCJ, by Avery Vise -May 4, 2012: -- After shedding jobs in March for the first time since July, for-hire trucking companies added 1,800 payroll jobs in April, according to the latest estimates released Friday, May 4, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. BLS revised preliminary March figures downward by 500 jobs, so the drop in March was 2,500 jobs... Payroll employment in for-hire trucking is up by 38,500 jobs, or 3%, from April 2011. Employment is up by 99,600 jobs, or 8.1%, from the bottom in March 2010, but it remains 119,600 jobs, or 8.2%, below the peak in January 2007... The BLS numbers for trucking reflect all payroll employment in for-hire trucking, but they don’t include trucking-related jobs in other industries, such as a truck driver for a private fleet...
* DC - NAFTA Trade Up 17.4 Percent in February
Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Joseph Bonney -May 1, 2012: -- Vehicles are top commodity in U.S.-Canada trade, at $8.7 billion The value of surface-transportation trade between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico rose 17.4 percent year-over-year to $78.1 billion in February, the Transportation Department reported. In February, 87.4 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved via land, 8.7 percent moved by vessel, and 3.9 percent moved by air. U.S.-Canada cross-border trade rose 13.7 percent to $45.4 billion. U.S.-Mexico trade rose 23 percent to $32.7 billion. The top commodity category transported between the U.S. and Canada by surface modes of transportation in February was vehicles, valued at $8.7 billion. The top commodity shipped between the U.S. and Mexico was electrical machinery, $6.6 billion...
