The economic recovery, tenuous on Main Street and shaky on Wall Street, is surprisingly strong on the open road, where trucking companies are accelerating faster than the general economy and generating higher revenue and profits...
* DC - Number of Active For-Hire Truckers Up 7.5 Percent

Cassidy -Apr 30, 2012: -- The number of active for-hire motor carriers in the U.S. rose 7.5 percent from February 2011 through this month, an increase of more than 11,500 trucking companies... That increase points to a broad resurgence in trucking and freight shipping also evident in the 11.6 percent increase in revenue among the 50 largest motor carriers in 2011... Most 'active' interstate motor carriers lack federal safety ratings, analysis finds... The vast majority of active motor carriers, 78 percent, have no safety rating from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration at all, the analysis discovered...
* Wiscosin - Schneider National Replacing More Than 3,000 Trucks

Cassidy -May 2, 2012: -- Schneider National, the largest privately owned U.S. truckload carrier, is replacing one-third of its truck fleet, purchasing more than 3,000 new trucks in 2012... That equates to 75 new trucks a week, the company said. Schneider will buy the 2012 and 2013 tractors primarily from Freightliner... Schneider’s new trucks will be equipped with OnGuard collision avoidance technology the company says will make vehicles and drivers safer on the highway... OnGuard features a forward-looking radar sensor that monitors the distance, speed and deceleration of a vehicle ahead and alerts truck drivers when they’re too close...
* Kansas - YRC Worldwide Narrows Loss to $48.8 Million

Troubled trucking giant YRC Worldwide narrowed its first quarter operating loss from a year ago while expanding revenue on an year-over-year increase in tonnage... YRC Worldwide lost $48.8 million in the first quarter, including an $8.4 million loss on asset disposals, compared with a $68.4 million loss in the year-ago quarter... YRC is struggling to recover from nearly $3 billion in losses from 2006 through 2011. The company’s most troubled unit is long-haul LTL carrier YRC Freight...
* Kansas - YRC Worldwide, Creditors Reach Agreement

YRC Worldwide's lenders agreed to reset financial covenants that underpin the company's restructuring to help the struggling trucking giant avoid bankruptcy... The lending group, which owns a substantial stake in the $4.9 billion company, also will let YRC keep all proceeds from the sale of surplus terminals and properties... The agreement will bring the financial targets set by YRC's lending agreements into line with a revised forecast released last fall by the less-than-truckload operator...
* Georgia - UPS Revenue, Operating Profit Climb

Brundage -Apr 26, 2012: -- Domestic business shines as fuel costs limit international growth Package delivery giant UPS reported a 4.3 percent increase in first quarter revenue to $13.1 billion from $12.6 billion a year earlier. The company’s operating profit rose 6.3 percent to $1.6 billion year-over-year, on a 4.3 percent increase in packages delivered, to 1 billion. The company attributed the gain to “rapid e-commerce growth and demand for lightweight shipping solutions”... International revenue inched up 2.3 percent to $3 billion, in part due to increased export volume growth in Europe, intra-Asia and Mexico. However, operating margin dropped to 13.8 percent, in part because of increased fuel costs...
* Michigan - Higher Rates, Volumes Triple Con-way Profit
Ann Arbor,MICH,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -May 2, 2012: -- LTL, truckload and logistics units all improve profit, yield in first quarter... Trucking and logistics giant Con-way more than tripled its net profit in the first quarter, increasing earnings to $25.6 million as revenue rose 9.7 percent to $1.37 billion... Excluding fuel surcharges, Con-way Freight's yield rose 4.1 percent, one of the stronger increases in the LTL industry in the quarter and a sign that rates are rising...
