* Sweden - Happy birthday to Volvo - 85 years old

Göteborg,Sweden -Gizmag -April 13, 2012:  -- Well known Swedish automotive icon Volvo is celebrating its 85th birthday, albeit these days owned by Chinese manufacturer Geely. At 10am on this day (April 14) in 1927, the first mass-produced Volvo ÖV4 was driven off the production line and through the company gates in Göteborg. At 10am today, exactly 85 years later, the same car will pass through the same gates... The name was pulled off the shelf for an SKF venture 16 years later when it decided to produce specially-made cars designed for the unique conditions experienced on Sweden's rough and often frozen roads. The necessary robust and durable nature of Volvo vehicles stood it in good stead, and the brand represents safety and quality to this day... Indeed, Volvo's most enduring legacy and a hallmark of its brand values, is that it focused its designs and research on automotive safety long before it became necessarily fashionable... Volvo Group is now one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles and the Geely-owned Volvo Car Corporation sells almost 500,000 cars each year... 


* Germany / USA - Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van outfitted like a private jet for New York Auto Show

Ventura,CAL,USA -Gizmag, by Chris Weiss -April 23, 2012: -- The Mercedes-Benz's JetVan Sprinter was specially outfitted by Becker Automotive Design for display at the New York Auto Show. It brings a level of luxury that not even the average limousine can offer.
(Photo: A 40-inch flat panel television provides entertainment) The spacious interior, which was purpose-built to emulate the interior of a private aircraft... The electronics package puts most home entertainment systems to shame. A center-mounted, 40-inch high-definition Runco LCD TV is assisted by a 1,300-watt 7.1 channel speaker system drawing its sound waves from multi-channel McIntosh amplifiers. If work is more your thing, the Becker Sprinter has a 500-GB on-board computer with wireless 4G connectivity. A set of fold-out writing tables allow you to use a notebook computer or actual notebook. All functions – seats, entertainment, computers, lighting, blinds etc. – are controlled by six-inch Creston touchscreens located on either side... Becker lists pricing for its JetVans between US$200,000 and $450,000, but it doesn't specify whether that includes the cost of the base vehicle or just the upgrades... 
 
* Germany - Mercedes-Benz Viano Vision Diamond - chauffeured luxury

Stuttgart,Germany -Gizmag -April 23, 2012: ... Mercedes-Benz has crafted the Mercedes-Benz Viano Vision Diamond - the luxury van as a chauffeured vehicle... The obligatory high quality paint and gold pin-striping and the words Mercedes-Benz emblazoned in gold mark the Vision Diamond as much more than a delivery van on the outside... The interior is the most relevant bit though, transforming from a business setting to a comfortable relaxation space and back at the touch of a button... 


* Germany - Mercedes-Benz gears-up for public launch of Citan city van

Stuttgart,Germany -Gizmag -April 16, 2012: -- Mercedes-Benz has released further details of its new Citan ahead of its first public appearance at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover in September...   Designed to "round out" the company's delivery van range by providing an urban-oriented alternative to the Sprinter and the Vito, the Citan will offer a choice of three lengths and three turbodiesel engine variants... Mercedes-Benz says it aims to capture a 4 to 5 percent market share of the small van segment with the Citan, predicting sales of over 400,000 units by 2015... The vehicle is the first to be produced under a strategic partnership between Daimler and Renault-Nissan and is due to launch this Autumn in Europe. No pricing details have yet been released...

 * Mercedes debuts 2013 G-Class

Stuttgart,Germany -Gizmag, by Chris Weiss -April 12, 2012: -- Mercedes-Benz debuted its 2013 G-Class off-roader this week. The vehicle receives some updates for the 2013 model year, but keeps its tough, rugged look and drive. Hard-nosed off-roader outside, Mercedes inside...  New equipment includes Blind Spot Assist and PARKTRONIC parking aid system with reverse camera. The ESP system has been updated and now includes Trailer Stability Assist and a HOLD function... The 2013 G350 BlueTec, G500 models, G63 and G65 will hit the German market in June. Pricing starts at €85,311...


* Sweden - Scania Nominates Piech to Board as VW Pushes Truck Merger 

Soedertaelje,Sweden -Bloomberg, by Heather Harris -Apr 30, 2012: -- Scania AB nominated Volkswagen AG Chairman Ferdinand Piech, to the Swedish truckmaker’s board, strengthening the German company’s influence as it forges ahead with a merger of its truck businesses... Piech, who turned 75 earlier this month, would replace Gunnar Larsson, the Soedertaelje, Sweden-based company said in a statement. Shareholders will vote on the proposal at their annual meeting on May 4... After raising its stake in MAN SE to 73 percent on April 13, VW is continuing to pursue a combination with the Munich-based truckmaker, Scania and its own commercial-vehicle operations. Among the options is a domination agreement of MAN, if VW accumulates a holding of more than 75 percent, Chief Financial Officer Hans Dieter Poetsch said this month...
