* Mexico - Toyota plans truck, possibly SUV production in 
--- Toyota Motor Corp said on Friday it planned to build pickup trucks and possibly SUVs at a new plant in Mexico, a move that followed threats by U.S. President, Donald Trump,  to penalize the company if it built small cars south of the border... Toyota initially planned to produce Corolla sedans at the plant it is building in the central state of Guanajuato but will now switch production of the small cars and a new Mazda SUV crossover to a new assembly plant planned for the United States... Trump threatened in January to impose a hefty fee on the world's largest automaker if it built Corollas for the U.S. market in Mexico... "Instead of building lower value cars that generally offer smaller margins in Mexico and keeping high-value SUV and luxury model production in the U.S., they are moving in the opposite direction," said Wilson, deputy director of the think tank's Mexico institute...

--- Iveco Defence Vehicles has won an order from the Swiss armed Forces for 400 trucks, scheduled for delivery 2017-2021. This initial delivery order forms part of a framework contract for a new fleet of specialised vehicles signed in November 2015 and scheduled for delivery 2016-2022 – the third such contract between the two parties since 1996... As with previous contracts, vehicle drive configurations will comprise a range of variants, from the new STRALIS and TRAKKER ranges, which will be supplied with a range of different equipment, some with protected cabins. The high level of technology fitted in the vehicles, together with the extended use of commercial off-the-shelf components are fundamental to ensuring the required safety and operability of the fleet. All vehicles will be fully-compliant with Euro 6 emissions regulations and fit for Single-Fuel-Operation...

* New York - Truck makers to face antitrust damages action in Germany, UK, Ireland and ... : It is likely that market prices for trucks generally were artificially inflated by cartel’s activity

... Daimler received the heaviest fine, €1 billion, while DAF’s fine was €753 million, Volvo’s was €670 million, and Iveco was subject to a fine of €495 million. MAN, a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, was not subject to monetary penalty, because it had brought the cartel to the commission’s attention, the EC said, but MAN could have been dinged €1 billion.

 --- According to the EC, from 1997 through 2004, company executives colluded at trade shows and over the phone to discuss the timing of gross list price increases for the trucks, which are the basis for the prices paid by final buyers. From 2004 to 2011, the coordination was done by the companies’ German subsidiaries, who mostly communicated electronically, the watchdog said... The cartel also discussed when to introduce trucks that complied with the increasingly strict Euro III to Euro VI environmental emissions standards and discussed passing on the costs of compliance to the buyers, the commission said... Now, a German transportation and logistics industry association said Wednesday that it has tapped Hausfeld LLP to head up a lawsuit seeking damages from truck producers who were fined a record €2.93 billion (then $3.23 billion) by regulators for participating in a price-fixing cartel... Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung eV issued a statement Wednesday saying BGL was looking to bundle as many as 100,000 purchases and rentals in the suit, which targets trucks made by MAN SE, Volvo/Renault, Daimler AG, Iveco Ltd. and DAF Trucks NV. BGL said the suit will be managed by Financialright GmbH, a firm that provides information technology and other services for collective actions, and be financed by litigation funding firm Burford Capital LLC... BGL CEO Dirk Engelhardt said in a German statement that the suit enables the groups’ member companies to have their claims represented by a strong community. The suit is open to nonmembers as well, BGL said... The commission has alleged that truck maker Scania AB was also involved in the cartel, but the company did not settle with the EC and is still being investigated... 

 ** In November an association of U.K. trucking companies, the Road Haulage Association, said it would seek to represent a class of operators looking to be compensated for damages from the price-fixing scheme before the Competition Appeal Tribunal under the U.K.’s new collective action regime... The group said that obtaining representative status in the action could take as long as a year and that it could be another two before any damages are paid out...

Dozens of damages claims by Irish hauliers against Europe’s biggest truck manufacturers over alleged anti-competitive practices have come before the High Court... The claims follow determination by the European Commission in July, 2016, that five major truck manufacturers – MAN, Volvo Renault, Daimler, Iveco and DAF – had broken EU anti-trust laws...

The jobs at the Dublin plant are highly sought because of the pay level. Employees commute from beyond the New River Valley, including the Roanoke area, farther Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. The average wage is more than $20 an hour for production workers.. The truck plant employs about 2,200 workers...

* Serbia to take control of truck maker FAP


--- Serbia will acquire a 95% stake in insolvent truck maker Fabrika Automobila Priboj (FAP) to avoid its liquidation, the Uzice commercial court said in a ruling on Thursday... The court gave the green light to the company's restructuring plan which involves the transformation of debt worth 8.693 billion dinars ($74.5 million/70.4 million euro) into capital and allows for the resumption of production activities, according to the court ruling... The Serbian Defence Ministry plans to award the company a contract for 22 trucks, managing director Milan Kostic told national broadcaster Radio Televizija Srbije (RTS) on Thursday, adding that FAP's could reach 200 in the beginning of 2017... FAP produces trucks, buses and trailers in addition to chassis and spare parts. The company was established in 1953. In 2002 the Serbian government started preparations for its privatisation.--

--- South Africa’s new truck market is under pressure, with a 10% drop in sales likely in 2016, says UD Trucks Southern Africa marketing director Rory Schulz. This means the new truck market should end the year around the 25 000-mark... The decline in the market reflects the fortunes of the South African economy, with almost zero economic growth expected in 2016... But a reshuffle in the boardroom at truck-maker Volvo seems to have handed Japanese-based UD Trucks back some of the autonomy lost when it was acquired by the Swedish group. Volvo – which includes Volvo, Renault and UD Trucks pressed on what this means, Volvo Group Trucks Asia and Joint Ventures sales president Jacques Michel says that the Volvo truck group will no longer be a multibrand organisation, but that it would rather focus on its individual brands... UD Trucks is now focused only on UD Trucks, “managing its own future”. South Africa is UD Trucks’ biggest market outside Japan... Schulz says UDTSA will continue truck assembly at its Rosslyn plant, near Pretoria... Overall UD sales in South Africa have dropped from 2 992 units in 2012, to 2 559 units in 2015... * Bangkok - Pickups set to be launched in November

--- China's car and truck maker Beiqi Foton Motor has made a foray into the Thai automotive market by setting up a wholly-owned subsidiary to handle sales and production of Foton's pickup trucks, passenger pickup vehicles (PPVs) and passenger cars in Thailand... According to Mr Chao, the parent firm has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Bangchan General Assembly Co (BGAC) to produce Foton's pickup trucks, PPVs and passenger cars to be sold to domestically... Production is scheduled to begin next month with a maximum capacity of 10,000 units a year... The automotive industry club of the Federation of Thai Industries forecast that domestic sales will stay at 750,000-780,000 units this year, down by a range of 2.5% to 6.2%, with exports rising 1-3% to 1.22-1.25 million units... Mr Chao expects to sell 3,500 vehicles in 2017 and 6,000 in 2018...

--- Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Jordan have been involved in purchasing thousands of Toyota pickup trucks that have been supplied to the ISIL terrorists in Syria and Iraq, Toyota customers' list in the Middle East shows... After photos of hundreds of ISIL's Toyota pickups seized or targeted by the Syrian Army were sent by the Russian army to the Toyota Company in Japan, the company revealed a list of its main customers that have bought the vehicles... The customers' list shows that a Saudi firm has purchased a sum of 22,500 trucks, Qatar 32,000, the UAE 11,650 and the Jordanian Army 4,500 vehicles from Toyota company. The Jordanian Army had received loans from several Saudi banks for payments... A large number of the purchased-vehicles by the four Arab countries have already been delivered to the ISIL terrorists in Syrian and Iraq... Informed sources have confirmed that ISIL has now over 6,000 Toyota vehicles... The US official had previously announced that they want to conduct a probe to find out how ISIL had received these vehicles, but analysts said further that Washington itself had been involved in export of hundreds of these pickup trucks to Syria...

* Jakarta - UD Trucks sees gold in RI’s infrastructure development


--- Japan-based truck maker UD Trucks has opened its first truck factory in Indonesia, hoping to benefit from the country’s growing infrastructure development in years to come... UD Trucks, which was acquired by Swedish automobile manufacturing giant Volvo in 2007, formed partnerships with Tjahja Sakti Motor and Gaya Motor to build the factory with investment worth US$3 million... The new factory, located in North Jakarta, is expected to produce 200 units of Quester trucks per month with more than 40 percent of local industrial content. Quester is a heavy duty truck designed specifically to cater the mining, construction and logistics sectors...

--- Mercedes-Benz, a unit of Daimler AG, cut 370 jobs in Brazil, after its voluntary layoff program failed to reach its original target, amid reduced sales of trucks and buses... The auto maker, which has four units across Brazil, said that the job cuts took place in its unit in São Bernardo do Campo in the state of São Paulo, where there is a total of around 9,000 employees... At the end of August, the company kicked off a voluntary layoff program to cut a total of 1,400 jobs. However, only 1,047 employees registered for the program, obligating the company to terminate other employees contracts, to reach its cost reduction target... For those, who attended the layoffs program, the company will make an one-time payment of 100,000 reais ($31,000), regardless of seniority and age... In the first eight months of this year, the most recent figure available, Mercedes posted a sales decline of 23.4% for trucks, and 24.7% for buses in Brazil. The company’s São Bernardo do Campo unit only manufactures trucks and buses...

--- The Israeli military has equipped Ford F-350 pickup trucks with remote driving technology and plans to disperse them along the border of the besieged Gaza Strip... The trucks, called Border Protector Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs), are each equipped with a 360-degree surveillance camera as well as four cameras that supplant a driver’s eyes on the road... G-NIUS – a joint venture between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elbit Systems that enjoys funding by the Israeli defense ministry – developed the “Border Protector” specifically for Gaza. Testing began in July 2015 and ended in February 2016... The Israeli military plans to deploy the new UGVs semi-autonomously in the next few months. --- The logistics of moving goods about with trucks may be open to a stepwise evolution towards full automation. The prospect of full automation, in which drivers are no longer required, is tantalising to the trucking industry owners whose major costs – outside capex – are fuel and drivers. Yet intervening stages come with significant investment costs and legal issues, which may put off rapid evolution in the market from the side of fleet operators and OEMs... In a new report from Roland Berger’s Americas Commercial Vehicle practice, titled ‘Automated Trucks: The next big disruptor in the automotive industry?’, the consultancy considers the effect of different levels of automation on the trucking industry, as well as the key drivers holding off, and urging, market evolution... * Conclusion: The payback period is relatively slow for two of the scenarios in which trucks are active, and given how far off full automation the technology is (15+ years), the pull for development of the technology is expected to be slow from both fleet operators and OEMs. OEMs are concerned about legal conditions surrounding the technology, while some OEMs may baulk at the costs. Yet, besides cost benefits to fleet operators and the legalese surrounding on road regulation, the technology also has the capacity to significantly improve safety on the road...

Implementing a new concept for an efficient and cost-effective truck assembly, the AVI facility is one of the first in the world to produce both Volvo and Renault trucks on the same assembly line... The first Saudi Arabia-built Renault Trucks have been assembled through the collaboration of a number of Renault-trained technicians, engineers, quality and logistics personnel from Bourg-en-bresse and a highly trained local AVI team... Tooling, fixtures, equipment, driven line, crane structures, special racking on the assembly line, proven tightening tools and different lifting and moving fixtures help the facility to run efficiently and seamlessly at optimum performance, producing up to 4,000 trucks annually for both brands combined... AVI’s knock down (KD) assembly facility is one of the first and biggest completed, fully functional projects in KAEC...
