* Arizona - Developer of self-driving technology for semi trucks arrives in Tucson

-- A Chinese startup company developing self-driving technology for commercial trucking has opened a facility in Tucson for research and testing — including a planned Tucson-Phoenix run with an autonomous truck... Beijing-based TuSimple LLC plans to spend millions of dollars and hire as many as 100 employees in the next five years, with the aim of perfecting intelligent driving systems and eventually running fleets of autonomous trucks... TuSimple’s technology employs cameras and radar sensors with the company’s proprietary software and other data to allow trucks to “see” the road in real time, like the human eye...

China: Nvidia backs TuSimple
--- Chinese autonomous truck developer TuSimple has secured funding from Nvidia Corp while Gu Sheng Tang, an operator of traditional medicine clinic network, completed a $150-million series D... TuSimple, a Beijing-based artificial intelligence startup in developing autonomous truck, has received an undisclosed sum of funding from the US-based chip manufacturer Nvidia Corp... This investment is part of series B round and also Nvidia Corp’s first investment in the Chinese startup. Nvidia will own a 3 per cent stake in TuSimple while the startup will support the development of the US company’s artificial intelligence computing platform for self-driving vehicles, Drive PX2...

* Manila - 176 China-made fire trucks defective
--- The Department of the Interior and Local Government confirmed Wednesday an audit report that 176 of the 469 China-made fire trucks purchased by the government in 2015 were defective... "Roughly 37 percent ay may mga defect -- from simple defects sa side mirror up to medyo serious na finding like problem sa engine, sudden acceleration," DILG Secretary, Catalino Cuy, said in a radio DZMM interview... The Bureau of Fire Protection, Cuy said, repaired and has been using the trucks with minor defects... Fire trucks with graver defects meanwhile remain unused... Cuy said the supplier should replace the defective vehicles... He said the DILG is studying a recommendation of the Commission on Audit to fine the supplier P16 million...

* Shandong - China's leading truck maker bullish on export

--- China National Heavy-Duty Truck Group (Sino) has exported 21,000 vehicles this year, maintaining its position as China's top truck exporter... The volume represents 40 percent of China's total truck exports, said Yu Youde, a senior manager of the State-owned company, based in Shandong province... Sinotruck's vehicles are sold in more than 90 countries. It has 160 sales offices and 590 parts and after-sales service points overseas, mostly in developing countries... The company has established ten assembly lines in southeast Asia and Africa... Yu said Sinotruck will continue to increase its presence in those regions, where more factories are planned...

* Shanghai - Self-driving Chinese truck in the tuture

--- The $300 billion Chinese trucking market is filled with long hauls and chaos. The government and technology firms are betting that self-driving 18-wheelers are the solution... Last month at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, the Internet services company Baidu (BIDU) and Foton showed off Super Truck. Apart from its array of sensors and distinctive surround windshield, the level 4 autonomous freight truck would not stick out in a crowd of diesel burners. That’s because it’s not from the future. China needs an answer to its freight logistics problem now. That urgency gives Chinese firms a big leg up in the race to autonomy and patent windfalls... Super Truck uses limited self-driving automation developed by Baidu and Foton’s Big Data algorithms for connected cars and driverless commercial fleets. It offers dramatically reduced man hours and fuel consumption. That is definitely something that can be sold to vehicle makers...

DRIVERLESS TRUCKS * China - Are revving their engines

* China is gearing up to overhaul its road delivery with fleets of self-driving long-haul trucks

--- A number of companies are developing automation technologies that promise to lower costs, reduce accidents, and improve overall efficiency for the trucking industry by allowing drivers to make longer trips that include periods of rest... Intercity freight transportation will be a huge market in China, says Xiaodi Hou, CTO of TuSimple, a company based in San Diego and Beijing that’s developing an automated trucking platform in partnership with a large Chinese truck maker (Hou declined to name which). He says there is effectively no restriction on testing self-driving systems in China currently, and he believes the government will be supportive because it wants to see the trucking industry improve... TuSimple is collecting data aboard a number of manually driven trucks. The company aims to demonstrate the technology in the first quarter of next year, and to have a commercial demonstration in 2018... The approach TuSimple is focused on is particularly cost-effective. It relies heavily on computer vision and algorithms that can understand a scene in detail, going beyond identifying vehicles to predicting what actions they may take. “Everything is done in computer vision with deep learning,” Hou says, referring to a popular kind of machine learning that involves feeding large amounts of training data into a big neural network... China’s auto regulator said in July that it was drafting rules regarding automated vehicles, and asked that companies limit their testing until they are released. However, Hou,  believe the government will ultimately be relaxed about testing and commercialization of self-driving trucks...

* Beijing - Chinese truck maker teams with Daimler, Cummins to launch Global Super Truck line

--- Chinese truck manufacturer Foton Motor has launched three fuel-efficient trucks under the Super Truck line in collaboration with Daimler, Cummins and German manufacturers ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Continental AG and other members of the Super Truck Global Innovation Alliance... Foton launched three Super Truck models at the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany, including the heavy-duty Auman Energy Super Truck and the Aumark S super medium-duty and light-duty trucks... The Auman EST is primarily aimed at global logistics companies with long-haul freight needs, while the two Aumark S models are designed for urban use...

JMC TRUCKMAKER * China: Enters light duty market with a new model

* Jiangxi - Chinese truck maker launch the JMC Conquer

--- Chinese truck maker Jiangling Motors (JMC) has made a play for the Australian light-duty market with the local launch of its Conquer truck this week... Arriving with a $32,000 pricetag, the new truck range is shipping in two models – with GVM ratings ranging from 4.5 tonne to 7.5 tonne – and two different power ratings... The smaller models will be powered by the company’s 2.4-litre high-pressure direct-injection diesel engine that pumps out 120hp (90kW) and 315Nm (232 ft-lb) of torque... The larger models will feature a 3.0-litre engine, which ups the output to 150hp (110kW)... It is understood the vehicles will be available with ABS brakes, air-conditioning, FM radio, CD player, auxiliary inputs, and a number of in-cab storage options. Whether airbags, cruise control or ESC will be available as added extras is yet to be revealed...

* Beijing - Truck manufacturers face overcapacity

---  China's truck manufacturers are keeping their eyes on international markets and on production upgrading as ways to deal with the industry's severe overcapacity... "The level of globalization will decide the future of our company", said Ma Chunji, chairman of China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Co Ltd, also known as Sinotruk, the top exporter of heavy trucks. According to him, Sinotruk will export half of its total sales in the future... Zhang Yu, managing director of Automotive Foresight (Shanghai) Co, said both overseas expansion and product upgrading fit the country's current supply-side reform program. He said the truck industry in China will experience dramatic structural changes and product upgrading in the next five years, anticipating the implementation in 2020 of the Nationwide VI emission standard for heavy-duty truck and bus engines...

* China - Mini truck maker's Fortune reaches $2 Bln as new listing climbs again

--- The fortune of Zhang Xinghai, chairman of Chinese mini truck maker Chongqing Sokon Industry Group reached $2 billion after the company’s high-flying listing closed at its upper daily trading limit for the 18th consecutive trading day on Friday at the Shanghai Stock Exchange... Zhang entered the motor vehicle industry in 2001 with his two brothers Zhang Xingming and Zhang Xingli, who cofounded the predecessor of the listed company in 2007. Sokon opened a U.S. subsidiary, SF Motors Inc., in January... Zhang, 52, together his wife Yan Min, own 37% of the listed company. The wife has no role in the business...

-- China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Co. Ltd. (Sinotruk), the country's largest heavy-duty truck maker, recorded 16.6-percent growth in exports in 2015, despite a sluggish global economy, the company said Tuesday... The Jinan-based truck manufacturer has clinched export orders for 40,000 heavy-duty trucks in 2015, making it the largest exporter of the vehicles in the country for 11 consecutive years... The company said burgeoning Southeast Asian and African markets contributed to the growth... So far, the Hong Kong-listed company has established six overseas assembly plants and representative offices in 40 countries...

-- Till recently, sales of light, medium and heavy-duty commercial trucks in China were at an all-time low owing to a slow economy and the lack of innovative design ideas. However, the market is seeing a resurgence as rapid urbanization leads to a flurry of infrastructure expansions, accelerating the demand for commercial trucks both directly (logistics) and indirectly (construction). As a result, offering a competitive selling price, ensuring strong aftersales services, and improving technology and supply chain features will allow participants to expand their share in the Chinese commercial trucks market... New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Strategic Analysis of Chinese Light, Medium and Heavy-Duty Commercial Truck Market, finds that unit shipments stood at 2.65 million in 2014 and estimates this to reach 3.63 million in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate of 4 percent... TRUCKMAKERS NEWS * China: Trucks exported to Vietnam

* China - Auto exports to Vietnam nearly triple, thanks to heavy truck sales

-- China has become Vietnam’s top source of automotive imports this year, surpassing the previous top exporter, South Korea... A crackdown by the Vietnamese government on a persistent problem of overloaded trucks that damage roads has also helped spur demand for low-cost heavy trucks from China even as demand for sedans made in South Korea and Thailand continues to grow... Vietnam imported 8,856 Chinese-made motor vehicles in the year through April, up from 2,274, or a 289 percent increase, from the same period last year, according to Vietnam Customs data posted Friday. Meanwhile, South Korea exported 7,744 vehicles in the first third of the year, up 48 percent from 5,231 in the same period last year. Vehicles made by foreign automakers in Thailand exported to Vietnam grew 165 percent, to 6,854 units... The most popular imported heavy truck in Vietnam is Toyota’s Chinese-made Hino, produced under a joint venture with China’s GAC. But peppered into the Vietnamese truck market are Chinese brands like JAC and C&C... While experts to Vietnam grew on demand for heavy trucks, China’s overall automotive exports have continued to decline this year, after dropping 7 percent to 910,400 units last year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers...

PICKUP TRUCK MAKER * China: Higer Longwei's

* Fujian - Higer Longwei pickup truck launched on the Chinese car market

  --  This is the new Higer Longwei pickup truck, looking fiery fast in orange, freshly launched on the Chinese car market. The Higer Longwei, or ‘Grand Dragon’, is a mid-sized crew-cab truck competing in the cheap end of the market... The interior is very decent for a pickup truck in this class, except for the steering wheel that looks far to 1987. The rest of the place is dressed up in brown, fake brown leather, some fake wood, fake aluminum, and some black surfacing to top it all off... The Higer Longwei is available with two engines: a 2.4 liter four-cylinder petrol sourced from Mitsubishi, with an output of 136hp and 200nm, and a 2.8 liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel with 102hp and 220nm, both mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. Rear wheel drive is standard, four-wheel drive is optional. Price starts at 81.800 yuan and ends at 101.800 yuan ($13.184 – 16.407)... Higer is a brand under Higer Bus, one of the largest bus makers in China, itself a subsidiary of the King Long Group, which is the largest bus maker in China...

* Shandong - Sinotruk to enter developed markets with high-end vehicles
 -- China National Heavy-Duty Truck Group Co, the nation's largest heavy truck exporter, is striving to expand its business into overseas high-end markets and make itself a top player in the sector worldwide... Sinotruk is also stepping up efforts to develop environmentally friendly heavy trucks aimed at high-end markets... The company produced engines that meet the Euro V emission standards in 2011 and got orders to export Euro V heavy-duty trucks to Brazil, Hong Kong and Taiwan... Sinotruk aims to increase the share of its exports of vehicles to 30 percent of the total, up from the current 20 percent, he said...
In 2009, Europe's leading heavy commercial vehicle maker MAN SE, owner of the Man brand, bought a 25 percent share and one stock share in Sinotruk Hong Kong and signed an agreement to transfer some advanced technologies to the Chinese truck maker... Sinotruk aims to increase the share of its exports of vehicles to 30 percent of the total, up from the current 20 percent... * Volvo muscles in Chinese truck industry 

 -- "Riding the east wind" is an ancient Chinese saying about seizing the momentum of natural forces to make further inroads... It also might sum up Swedish truck maker Volvo Group's investment in Dongfeng Group (DFG), China's biggest player in the world's largest truck market. Dongfeng literally translates as "east wind" ... The deal, after 9 years of negotiations, was finalized last month when Volvo Group bought 45 percent of a subsidiary of DFG, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles (DFCV) for 5.5 billion yuan (US$885 million)... The deal comes as China's heavy-duty vehicle market shows signs of flattening. Does that mean the new joint venture is an "ill wind that blows nobody any good?" ... * Experts: Sector needs more sustainable basis


-- China's commercial vehicle industry will enter an adjustment period of three to four years, as the economic slowdown dampens demand and a sustainable development model requires greater transport efficiency and reduced emissions, experts said at a transport industry seminar over the weekend... After lengthy delays, China began to implement the national stage 4 (NS4) emission standards - similar to the Euro 4 standards - for diesel vehicles on January 1, 2015, a move that industry analysts said will cause the removal of trucks and lorries that produce high levels of pollutants and will benefit those with more advanced technology... Sales of commercial vehicles in China fell by 6.53 percent year-on-year to 3.79 million units in 2014, compared to annual growth of 6.4 percent in 2013, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers... Meanwhile, the industry's downturn has not affected foreign automakers' efforts to increase their presence in the Chinese mainland market... Experts still have confidence in the commercial vehicle industry's long-term prospects... China is mulling an amendment to the Law on Road Traffic Safety, and severe overloading could be made a criminal offence, Zhou Wenhui, an expert with the Road Traffic Safety Research Center of the Ministry of Public Security, said at the seminar...
