* DC - U.S. road deaths fell 1.7 percent in 2011 

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -May 8, 2012: -- Road deaths in 2011 fell 1.7 percent, their lowest number since 1949, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday. Preliminary numbers show an estimated 32,310 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes last year, down 1.7 percent over the 32,885 road deaths in 2010... Traffic fatalities have been steadily declining over the last five years since hitting 42,708 in 2005. Fatalities have decreased about 26 percent from 2005 to 2011...  The decline in road deaths in 2011 is smaller than 2010, when road deaths fell 2.9 percent...


* DC / USA - Electronics companies oppose ban on hands-free calls 

Washington ,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -May 8, 2012: -- The nation's electronics companies oppose efforts by the National Transportation Safety Board to bar drivers from making hands-free calls behind the wheel... The Consumer Electronics Association in a letter to the National Transportation Safety Board said while it opposes the NTSB proposal on hands-free calls, it supports efforts to develop technology features that disable the functions of portable electronics devices within reach of the driver when a vehicle is in motion... Thirty states ban all cellphone use by young drivers... 


* Belgium - Want To End Texting and Driving? Belgium Shows How It's Done 

Brussels,Belgium -The Car Connection (USA), by Richard Read -May 8, 2012: ... Rather than asking Belgian to force their kids to text and drive,  Responsible Young Driver assigned that duty to one of the scariest, most intimidating people in a teenager's life: the driving instructor... The set-up was simple: a driving instructor told test-takers that new regulations required them to prove that they could text and drive. Some students balked in disbelief, but official-looking documents quickly shut them up... The results were captured on video*, have a look:


* New York / USA - App monitors texting, other dangerous vehicle movements 

 New York,NY,USA -Fleet Owner -May 7, 2012: -- A new iPhone and Android app from Dangerous Decisions can monitor texting or phone use when a vehicle is in motion. The app also can monitor and record driving behavior associated with excessive turns or speeds, quick acceleration, or sudden braking, the company said...  The program, App4Drivers, can notify drivers or managers when it detects dangerous behavior. App4Drivers creates a trip report and a map showing where driving performance exceeds desired set levels for speed, braking, turning, and for cell phone use. The map can be automatically transmitted to any location...


* USA - Survey: Eight In 10 Young Drivers Admit Texting, Driving

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane Suzanne Kane -May 10, 2012: -- Young drivers believe it's dangerous to talk and to text on smartphones while they're driving, but they're doing it anyway, according to a new study from Consumer Reports... The magazine's latest issue found that, of those young drivers surveyed, almost all said they considered texting, accessing the Internet, or using smartphone apps while driving to be dangerous, with 80 percent saying it was “very dangerous”. Some 63 percent said talking on a handheld phone behind the wheel was dangerous... Why such a discrepancy between what young drivers admit is dangerous or very dangerous and their actions? The answer, not surprisingly, is peer behavior. Eighty-four percent of those surveyed said they’d seen other young drivers talking on a handheld phone, 70 percent saw texting, and nearly one-third saw their peers using social media, email or apps...
