Washington,DC,USA -Land Line -9 May 2012: -- With advancements in braking and stability control systems for semis, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is toying with making the systems mandatory... The agency decided to proceed with the proposal after an extensive research program evaluated the available technologies, as well as the cost and benefit of such a mandate. The agency’s preliminary estimate shows the stability systems have an effectiveness range of 37 to 56 percent against single-vehicle tractor-trailer rollover crashes and 3 to 14 percent against loss of control crashes that result from skidding on the road surface. The agency estimates that will save 29 to 66 lives... The price tag for such a mandate is estimated at between $55 million and $107 million annually by NHTSA...
