* Germany - VW: Significant Synergies Via MAN, Scania Cooperation Mid-Term
Hamburg,Germany -The WSJ (USA), by Katharina Becker / Dow Jones Newswires -April 22, 2010: -- Volkswagen AG is encouraging truck makers MAN SE and Scania AB toward closer co-operation, the company said Thursday... "We are convinced there will be a strong revival of the cyclical truck and bus segment in the medium term. Step by step, we will be harnessing the short-term opportunities for cooperating in the fields of development and components," VW Chief Executive, Martin Winterkorn, told the VW shareholders meeting in Hamburg... Medium term, closer cooperation will create considerable synergies which benefit all the companies involved, Winterkorn said... Following a reshuffling of MAN's management last year, speculation has been rife that Volkswagen may increase its stake in MAN and merge it with Scania... Volkswagen holds almost 30% of MAN's stock and has a majority stake in Scania..
* Sweden - Volvo Posts First Profit For Six Quarters; Outlook Cautious
Stockholm,Sweden -The WSJ (USA)/Dow Jones -23 April 2010: -- Volvo Friday reported its first net profit in six quarters, but maintained its cautious outlook... "The European market shows signs of gradual improvement," Chief Executive Leif Johansson said, adding that in North America demand for new trucks has been low while demand for used trucks has increased... The Swedish company, which sells trucks under the Mack, Renault and UD Trucks brands as well as its own name, reported a net order intake of 43,936 trucks in the first quarter, up from 38,166 the previous quarter...
