AOL Autos - April 13, 2010: -- Electronics, computerized systems almost completely replaced mechanical systems... Toyota emphasized unintended accelerations due to mechanical problem or floor mats. Since November, Toyota recalled 8.5M vehicles, including +6M in US... Owners of 2010-model Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan hybrids taking cars in for software upgrade... Driver claimed his Blackberry triggered some electronic-system malfunctions... Core of debate: is almost total dependence on electronics source of safety / quality problems?. Some reports suggested electromagnetic interference might be responsible for some glitches. An electronic system criticized is push-button ignition; must hold button down to shut off engine... New "brake override" or "smart throttle" system shuts off fuel supply to engine... Addition of electronic systems have made cars much safer... Number of traffic fatalities keep falling every year...
