TACKLING TRUCKERS' FATIGUE * Canada

* Quebec - Canada: To require bus and truck drivers to log hours electronically

-- After years of study, the federal government says it will implement new safety regulations in two years that are aligned with U.S. efforts to tackle fatigue among truck and bus drivers... Drivers will be required to electronically record their hours on the road, says Transport Canada, marking a change from the mandatory paper logs that have been in use since the 1930s... The regulations would cover cross-border and interprovincial travel and should be in place when similar rules in the U.S. come into force in late 2017, Transport Canada says...

(Photo: Webasto dashboard innovation will reduce driver workload)
Stockdorf,Germany -Transport Engineer (UK)  -13 Jan 2012: -- Coach dashboards that have more than 50 buttons and indicators, often with more on the steering wheel, are not ideal places to concentrate on safe passenger transport, according to Webasto – which has come up with a solution...  The Webasto Touchtronic system, developed with Nav-Comm, is described as an intelligent 8in-wide touch screen control, which groups multiple function buttons into one logically arranged and easily-read grouping... In this way, all systems related to requirements such as interior air conditioning, heating and fresh air control are integrated – resulting in intelligent climate control, programmed for each vehicle and driver preferences...

TRUCKS CONTROL * Argentine - AFIP tax bureau implements new system

In-transit goods to be tracked by satellite

Buenos Aires,CABA,Argentine -The Buenos Aires Herald -16 Aug 2010: -- The Customs last Thursday launched a Customs Transit Security Initiative for goods in transit by truck through the country that involves the use of an electronic seal. The electronic seal will enable Customs to keep track in real time of the truck movements and take any measures should irregularities arise... Customs services in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile have already been in contact with Argentina asking how to the system can be implemented... The AFIP head noted that the volume of goods in transit had risen by 63 percent this year compared to the same period last year... Operations that fall under the new system will be registered in the María computerised trade system with the TRAM code. Once Customs has scrutinised all the shipping documents, it will authorise the transport company to place the electronic seals on the trucks. Once in place, these are activated automatically and the event is recorded in the María system and the Custom’s single monitoring centre (CUMA)... Customs will control the movements of the cargo, the route taken by the truck and will implement controls in response to the alerts received... Electronic Stability Control * Canada - Significant vehicle safety feature will be mandatory next year

Electronic stability control made simple

Toronto,Ontario,CAN -The Globe and Mail, by Richard Russell -Jun. 24, 2010: -- Electronic stability control – one of the most significant automotive safety features of the modern era – will become mandatory on all new passenger vehicles built and sold in Canada after Sept. 1, 2011... Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 126 will apply to passenger cars, multi-purpose vehicles, trucks and buses weighing 4,536 kilograms or less. This regulation and its timing coincide with its adoption in the United States. ESC will become mandatory in all new vehicle types sold in Europe as of Nov. 1, 2011... ESC is especially useful in situations where the driver makes sudden or violent steering inputs in an attempt to avoid a collisions or obstacle. This action commonly leads to the front or rear tires losing grip and a spin, which ESC detects in the early stage, bringing the vehicle back under control... (iStock Photo)

Since November, Toyota recalled 8.5M vehicles, including +6M in US... Owners of 2010-model Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan hybrids taking cars in for software upgrade... Driver claimed his Blackberry triggered some electronic-system malfunctions... Core of debate: is almost total dependence on electronics source of safety / quality problems?. Some reports suggested electromagnetic interference might be responsible for some glitches. An electronic system criticized is push-button ignition; must hold button down to shut off engine... New "brake override" or "smart throttle" system shuts off fuel supply to engine... Addition of electronic systems have made cars much safer... Number of traffic fatalities keep falling every year... (Video from YouTube, by consumerreports —23 March 2010 — Smart-throttle technology enables the brake pedal to override the accelerator in an emergency situation.
