DRIVERS' SAFETY * USA - Lane Departure Warning Systems for the Rest of Us

New York,NY,USA -The NY Times, by JOHN R. QUAIN -April 13, 2010: -- Sophisticated driver assistance safety technologies, like beeping lane departure warning systems and dashboard lights that flash when you follow another car too closely, have generally only been available as a factory-installed option on new cars. Drivers of older vehicles have had to make do without it. But now at least one company hopes to make such systems more readily available to those who aren’t in the market for a new car... Mobileye C2-170 system it includes a camera with built-in software, a speaker, and a small dash-mounted display. The camera is mounted in front of the rear view mirror and can detect lane markings. It also continually calculates the distance between your car and any vehicles in front of you... When a driver drifts out of the lane without signaling, the systems sounds an alarm. Should you follow the car in front too closely, a red light on the display flashes and an alarm sounds. The same alerts occur should the vehicle directly ahead suddenly stop. The company plans to add pedestrian detection warning in three months; that model will be the CS-270... Unfortunately, the technology is still pricey: just under $1,000 to be installed in most cars... (Photo: Mobileye C2-170)
