TRUCKERS' STORIES * USA - King of the road: Still rolling at 80

Statesville,NC,USA -Statesville R&L, by Jim McNally -October 17, 2009: -- Jim Freeland turns 80 today, but his celebration of the big eight-oh will not last the weekend... Freeland, a trucker, has work to do, he said had to learn about back roads everywhere to avoid the scales... He said the rules about how much weight a truck could carry used to change as you drove across country. And if you were packing more than you were allowed, he said, you had to know the side rides... But the fact that Freeland is still earning a paycheck, when the most strenuous thing most people his age are doing is lifting up their grandkids or great-grandkids, is a testament to his credo of stay busy or start to fade away... He still rides his BMW motorcycle around town and last flew his plane about a year ago... As far as work goes, he's nowhere near retirement age... * USA - The Watkins Freight is more than just a trucking company; it is a family

Jacksonville,FL,USA -LCT Business & Finance News -October 16, 2009: -- Watkins Freight and Trucking is part of the Watkins Family of Trucking. Apart from Watkins Motor Line, Watkins also includes Sunco Carriers, Highway Transport Petroleum, Highway Transport Chemical, Highway Transport Logistics, Landspan Logistics and Landspan Long haul. Each one of these trucking companies specializes in a different type of freight... Watkins is a family owned business with roots buried deep in Florida in the 1930’s... Watkins, like many of its competitors, offers a tracking service where you are able to track your shipments across the state or country. This is extremely convenient for customers, distributors and manufacturers as they know where their delivery is at all times. Watkins can provide discounts and bulk billings to companies and are always keen for more partnerships with various companies across the nation. They are reliable, fast and efficient which is why they are one of the best in the business... (Photo: It all began when Bill Watkins, better known as “BW,” used the $300 he had earned working on the family’s farm in Metcalf, Georgia, to buy the first Watkins truck--a red, three-quarter-ton Dodge pickup...)
