FUEL COSTS TROUBLES * USA - A life-or-death matter for truckers

Many companies are cutting back on fleets

Concord,NH,USA -Concord Monitor -8 April 2008: -- The cost of keeping all five of his trucks rolling proved too costly for Jim Eastman, owner of Jim Eastman Trucking and Excavation in Hartford... With the rising cost of diesel contributing to expenses, Eastman said, he was forced more than a year ago to sacrifice two of his six-axle tractor-trailer trucks, and two of his drivers, to ensure the survival of his company, which hauls logs and pulp... Truckers' grievances with the high price of diesel came to national attention Tuesday, when truckers around the country, most of whom were independent, took part in a loosely organized nationwide protest. Many brought traffic to a standstill by slowing to a crawl or stopping completely... Robert Danforth, owner and operator of R.W. Danforth Transportation & Construction in Corinth, Vt., said a standardized rate of pay should be set for all truckers, as well as a separate rate of pay based on changes in fuel costs. Standardized prices would help make life easier for truckers... Better government regulation of the commodities market and Wall Street traders could help balance out the price of oil, RSD Transportation's Peter Daniels, said. Drilling domestic oil could also help reduce prices, he said... (Photo)
