DRIVERS SHORTAGE * USA - Changing face of trucking industry

High-tech trucks, predictable schedules, revamped training

Phoenix,AZ,USA -The Associated Press/The Trucker, by GLEN CRENO -11 Feb 2008: -- ... The job of a long-haul trucker is changing and, many trucking companies hope, becoming more attractive... Trucking companies across the country are facing a shortage of long-haul drivers... To compensate, companies are trying to recast trucking's nomadic image and recruit more minorities, retired military people and those who want a second career... Middle-age husband-and-wife teams are becoming more popular... Although the industry is trying to make trucking more attractive, former long-hauler Charles Blagg says potential drivers should understand they will still face the challenges of "miserable" big-city traffic, long hours and weeks away from home... Driving long-haul was difficult, he said. He had no regular sleeping hours and would sometimes make pickups at 2 or 3 in the morning, drive 500 miles and then do the same thing again...
