Deckard says cost of maintaining former military vehicles overrides cheap price
Martinsville,IN,USA -The Reporter-Times, by A.J. Nelson -February 10, 2008: -- Buying military surplus vehicles might seem like a great deal to cash-strapped cities and towns, but the long-term cost of keeping the high-mileage vehicles rolling might negate any real savings, according to city officials... “It’s mostly a waste of money,” said Martinsville Mayor Phil R. Deckard... Since 1998, the city of Martinsville has made use of the federal surplus program that makes used military trucks available at little cost to units of government... But critics pointed out the trucks were in constant need of repair, were noisy and looked bad...
