USA -Forbes, by Jerry Flint -30 June 2006: -- That seems to be the thought of Kirk Kerkorian, the Las Vegas investor who owns 10% of GM. He has suggested a combining of interests of GM and the Nissan/Renault entity run by Carlos Ghosn... Both companies are in trouble. GM has lots of problems. Renault/Nissan is much better off than GM, but its rosy days are over, at least for now. Nissan's sales have been falling in Japan, in the United States and in Europe. Renault isn’t setting the continent ablaze. Now there comes a time in a recovery, as Nissan’s, when everybody slows down to take a breath. That’s happened at Nissan... Still, it’s reason for Renault/Nissan to think of another big step... Sometimes these conglomerations work--and sometimes they don’t. Remember how GM was burned with its Fiat deal of a few years ago. Even Daimler’s Chrysler takeover was rocky for several years. Going back several decades, the combination of Studebaker and Packard failed to save the auto business at either company... The announcement at the end of June was startling. Such a combination could happen. Godzilla is really scaring people. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, or that these three auto giants can combine and form a viable company...
