BOLSTERING TRUCK SALES * Japan: Truck makers offer swag in Southeast Asia

* Tokyo - Mitsubishi Fuso eyes 24-hour repair shops; Hino giving free driving lessons

--- Two leading Japanese truck makers are bolstering their after-sales services to further cement their solid positions in Southeast Asia... Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus will start building a chain of 24-hour repair shops in Indonesia, while Hino Motors has built a free safe-driving school in Malaysia. The moves are meant to boost brand image and customer loyalty -- and eventually to capture demand for replacement parts and vehicles in the large and growing region... The strategy marks an evolution from just selling trucks to building a loyal customer base in Southeast Asia, where about 2 million trucks were sold in 2016. That is about 10 times the figure in Japan, according to U.S. research company Frost & Sullivan...

TRUCK SALES* Australia: October heavy truck sales remain steady

* ACT - The van category was 18.9 per cent above the record 2014 result

-- New truck sales data by the Truck Industry Council (TIC) showed that cab chassis and prime mover sales during October were slightly down on September, but up on a year-to-date basis... According to TIC, cab chassis and prime mover sales during October came in at 2,320 units – slightly down from the 2,430 figure in September and the 2,457 result achieved during the same month a year ago... However, the year-to-date total of 21,535 units was 164 up on the same period last year, leading TIC to expect a growth of just 0.8 per cent for 2015... The van category maintained its remarkable growth pace despite a slight decline over September, with the boom in parcel deliveries and demands from trades pushing the YTD to 4,545 vans – which was 18.9 per cent above the record 2014 result...

TRUCK SALES * USA: New orders for tractor-trailers fell 45% in October

* NY - Trucking companies scale back fleet purchases on tepid demand

-- Orders for new tractor-trailers plummeted in October, typically a bellwether month for commercial transportation equipment, as trucking companies contended with depressed freight rates, flagging demand and excess capacity... Trucking companies placed orders for 25,000 new Class 8 trucks, the heavy-duty trucks that are the backbone of domestic freight shipping, according to the FTR transportation research group... That was down 45% from October 2014, although 30% higher than September. ACT Research, another transportation data firm, reported almost identical numbers for Class 8 vehicles... Stifel analysts attributed the soft orders result to softer freight volumes, falling prices for used tractors, lower average equipment ages, lower diesel prices, which reduce truckers’ incentive to upgrade to the newest, most fuel-efficient vehicles and high inventories of trucks that have been built, but not yet sold. Stifel predicts annual production of Class 8 trucks will fall to 280,000 in 2016 from 330,000 in 2015...

TRUCKS SALES * USA & Canada: July

* U.S.A. / Canada - Medium- and Heavy-duty truck sales rise

-- U.S. and Canadian medium- and heavy-duty truck sales made overall gains in July compared with the prior year, WardsAuto reports, but a breakdown by class shows where sales in the two countries diverge. That's particularly true for Class 8 trucks... In the United States, Class 8 sales "accounted for the bulk of big-truck gains with nearly all brands enjoying double-digit increases," according to WardsAuto, and were up by 24.4% compared with July 2014. That helped drive a year-over-year 12.0% increase for U.S. medium and heavy duty sales overall... In Canada, however, sales data tell a different story. "All segments except for Class 8 enjoyed gains," WardsAuto reports. Canadian Class 8 truck sales fell 2.9% overall in July compared with the prior year, with only Freightliner and Volvo posting gains in the segment. Compared with U.S. sales, Canadian medium and heavy duty truck sales overall showed a smaller year-over-year increase of 1.9% for July...

TRUCK SALES * Australia: The heavy-duty segments in doldrums, except vans

* ACT - Trucking productivity seen in peril as vehicle age rises

-- Despite van sales boost, TIC boss McMullan worries for economic performance, safety and environment... With truck sales still in the doldrums, particularly in the heavy-duty segments, the Truck Industry Council (TIC) has reiterated its concern about the state of the national truck fleet... The only source of solace has been the continuing performance of light-duty vans... All truck segments posted losses over the same month in 2014, the TIC notes, with heavy duty down 2.8 per cent, medium duty down 4 per cent and light duty 3.9 per cent... Against that, light-duty vans are a beacon with 412 sales, up a healthy 23.7 per cent, or 79 vans, compared with the previous July... The year-to-date tally stands at 3,269 sales, up 29.1 per cent or 736 vans, compared with the same period in 2014...

TRUCKS SALES * USA: July surprise !!!

* Indiana - North American truck orders stage

-- Two newly issued preliminary reports show North America increases in both heavy-duty and medium-duty truck orders... The freight transportation forecasting firm FTR said Class 8 truck net orders rose for the first time this year to 23,920 units, up 21% month-over month, but down 19% versus last July... A separate report from commercial vehicle industry data provider ACT Research shows Class 8 North America orders in July totaled 24,100 units, 19% above June orders...

... The hike was much higher than expectations as a few big fleets placed their large 2016 requirement orders a few months early. Orders were down year-over-year due to a similar, but heftier, spike last July, according to FTR... This follows a comparable rise in commercial trailer orders in June. The market remains robust with Class 8 orders totaling 356,000 units over the last 12 months... Bloomington & Columbus, IND, USA - Today's Trucking –Aug 5, 2015

TRUCK SALES * USA: 90 CNG garbage trucks

* Washington - Spokane rolls out new compressed natural gas garbage trucks

-- The City of Spokane unveiled its newest compressed natural gas garbage trucks Monday morning. Overall, the city will replace 90 trucks over the next seven years, cutting its green house gas emission by 20 percent. While CNG trucks cost around $30,000 more than standard diesel, the city says that cost is recouped in three years, through fuel and maintenance savings... The city estimates the new CNG vehicles, which cost $360,000 per unit, will save the city around $8,000 a year per truck compared to the older diesel models... The new CNG trucks will last about 10 years and the gas tanks on the new vehicles have to be certified every five years...

TRUCK SALES * India: Price increase on account of a new safety legislation

* India -  Truck sales set to rise ahead of rule change

-- Fleet operators are set to advance truck purchases ahead of an impending change in rules, which could push up prices by as much as Rs.60,000- 80,000... New safety legislation, which includes compulsory ABS and speed limiters, will push up truck prices by Rs60,000-80,000... The price increase will be on account of a new safety legislation that will come into effect from 1 October and will make features such as anti-lock braking system (ABS) and a speed-control device mandatory for trucks... While the legislation allows selling trucks without such features till 31 March 2016, it prohibits production of such models from October. To beat the deadline, a number of firms are increasing production leading up to October... Tata Motors’ Pisharody said so far, the growth in the markets is being solely driven by haulage, or cargo trucks, and the contribution from tippers, which are deployed in mines and construction, has been almost negligible...

* French Army going American with Ford Ranger

* France - French Army is buying fleet of Ford Pickup Trucks

-- In what might be construed as a blow to Gallic pride, the French Army will soon be patrolling La Belle France, in Ford Ranger pickups... The French Army is buying 1,000 of the Ford trucks as part of a “crash program” to begin replacing its fleet of off-road vehicles, said Pierre Bayle, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry... Ford got the nod for the first replacement order because of its large payload capacity, he said. The truck can carry five adults and a ton of cargo, more than the French vehicles... This Ranger is made in South Africa... Maya Vautier, a Renault spokeswoman, said that Ford did not really beat its French rivals since they do not make such large off-road vehicles... In political terms, sourcing military procurement overseas is a tricky business on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2008, the Pentagon chose the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company, the maker of Airbus planes, and its American partner, Northrop Grumman, for a contract to replace America’s aging fleet of refueling tanker jets. That award generated a storm of protest and a fierce lobbying effort by Boeing...

TRUCK & TRAILER SALES * USA: April’s Class 8 Orders Down

* Indiana - Trucking Analysts say April’s Class 8 orders down 10% over last year

-- FTR released preliminary data late Monday showing April’s North American Class 8 truck net orders at 22,076 units — an 11 percent month-over-month decline and 10 percent lower than a year ago... Meanwhile, analysts at ACT Research said its figures show Class 8 orders posting their lowest monthly net order volume since November 2013 at 22,400 units, which matches FTR’s 10 percent drop year over year... The report from FTR said the additional order drop off in April reflects market stabilization returning to traditional seasonal trends, with Class 8 orders now totaling 373,000 units over the last 12 months. The company expects that order rates will continue to fall throughout the summer months... The Class 8 market is now back to an equilibrium state, albeit at a strong level. This continues the trend from March with nothing expected in the short term to impact overall 2015 business activity...

 * Indiana - Used truck sales and trailer orders both point skyward in March

-- The number of used Class 8 tractors climbed to 2,770 units in March, a 14 percent increase over the month before and 5 percent more than a year ago, according to figures released by ACT Research of Columbus, Ind. ... And orders for new trailer totaled 23,190 units for the month, climbing 12 percent above February’s levels, the trucking industry forecaster reported... Steve Tam, ACTs’ vice president of the commercial vehicle sector said, that slightly higher miles and flat age conspired to put downward pressure on the average selling price of total reported Class 8 trucks. Prices were 2 percent lower month over month... The latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, provides data on the average selling price, miles and age based on a sample of industry data. In addition, the report provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEM’s – Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo)... Meanwhile, Frank Maly, director of commercial vehicle transportation analysis and research for ACT, noted several positives for the trailer industry, including impending resolution of the West Coast ports labor issues, good freight volume, and robust investment plans by fleets...

TRUCKS MAKERS SALES * USA & Canada

* Ontario - USA and Canadian trucks and auto makers set November record for

(Photo by Lynne Sladky/AP - In this Oct. 1, 2014 photo, Dodge Ram trucks are displayed at Planet Dodge, in Miami)
Toronto,ONT,CAN -AP/The Globe and Mail -Dec. 02 2014: -- Drivers looking for a new truck helped push Canadian auto sales up 3.6 per cent in November to set a record for the month, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. Meanwhile, DesRosiers noted that sales through the first 11 months of the year were just shy of the total sold in all of last year... Meanwhile, U.S.A. auto sales were also higher in November, driven by Black Friday promotions, falling gas prices, low-interest loans and hot new vehicles... Car-buying site Kelley Blue Book estimated that 25 to 30 per cent of the U.S. new vehicle sales in November happened over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend thanks to a flurry of promotions. Because the holiday came late in the month, buyers also benefited from dealers’ usual month-end sales push... U.S.A. new vehicle sales rose 5 per cent to 1.3 million, according to Autodata Corp. It was the second-fastest monthly sales pace this year, after August... The remaining holiday season is expected to be strong on both sides of the border...
