ACT’s estimate for U.S. net trailer orders is 13,450 units, the company stated, adding that final June numbers will be published later in the month... “Seasonal patterns suggest a modest month-over-month increase in net orders from May to June,” he said. “The year-over-year comparison, against an extremely strong June 2015, shows net orders approximately half of last year’s volume” ... * Connecticut - FTR Reports Trailer Orders plummet

-- FTR reports net orders for new trailers in the United States totaled 15,200 units in May — 14 percent below the previous month and 29 percent year-over-year... The traditional summer slide continues, earlier and more pronounced than normal; however, there is still plenty of backlog available to support strong build rates through the end of the year. U.S. trailer orders have annualized over the past 12 months at 326,000 units... While backlogs are strong, they have fallen 15 percent since the January peak. Dry van, flatbed, and liquid tank were the primary segments affected by the lower order rate in May. Refrigerated vans and the dump trailer market continue with positive comparisons. Production remains steady for all trailer types...

TRUCK & TRAILER SALES * USA: April’s Class 8 Orders Down

* Indiana - Trucking Analysts say April’s Class 8 orders down 10% over last year

-- FTR released preliminary data late Monday showing April’s North American Class 8 truck net orders at 22,076 units — an 11 percent month-over-month decline and 10 percent lower than a year ago... Meanwhile, analysts at ACT Research said its figures show Class 8 orders posting their lowest monthly net order volume since November 2013 at 22,400 units, which matches FTR’s 10 percent drop year over year... The report from FTR said the additional order drop off in April reflects market stabilization returning to traditional seasonal trends, with Class 8 orders now totaling 373,000 units over the last 12 months. The company expects that order rates will continue to fall throughout the summer months... The Class 8 market is now back to an equilibrium state, albeit at a strong level. This continues the trend from March with nothing expected in the short term to impact overall 2015 business activity...

 * Indiana - Used truck sales and trailer orders both point skyward in March

-- The number of used Class 8 tractors climbed to 2,770 units in March, a 14 percent increase over the month before and 5 percent more than a year ago, according to figures released by ACT Research of Columbus, Ind. ... And orders for new trailer totaled 23,190 units for the month, climbing 12 percent above February’s levels, the trucking industry forecaster reported... Steve Tam, ACTs’ vice president of the commercial vehicle sector said, that slightly higher miles and flat age conspired to put downward pressure on the average selling price of total reported Class 8 trucks. Prices were 2 percent lower month over month... The latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, provides data on the average selling price, miles and age based on a sample of industry data. In addition, the report provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEM’s – Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo)... Meanwhile, Frank Maly, director of commercial vehicle transportation analysis and research for ACT, noted several positives for the trailer industry, including impending resolution of the West Coast ports labor issues, good freight volume, and robust investment plans by fleets...

Trailers' Technology * USA - Mesilla reports saving 60,000 gallons of fuel using

Messilla,CAL,USA -Logistic Manager, by Jack Roberts -February 8, 2011: -- Mesilla Valley Transportation executive vice president Jimmy Ray says tractor-trailers in his fleet have logged over 8 million miles equipped with ATDynamics’ TrailerTail rear-drag aerodynamic panels and, as a result, have saved 60,000 gallons of fuel since August of 2010... To date, Ray says 650 trailers in the Mesilla Valley fleet have been outfitted with TrailerTail rear-drag panels and have driven over 8 million highway miles since last summer. “According to our studies, the addition of TrailerTail panels to a trailer works out to a fuel economy gain of 4/10s of a gallon of fuel per mile. That figure rises to 8/10s of a gallon per mile when you combine a trailer tail with side skirts” ... Ray says Mesilla Valley is currently retrofitting its entire fleet of over 3,500 trailers with TrailerTail technology...   (Photo from roadtransport.com/blogs/big-lorry-blog: TrailerTail )

Chippenham,Wiltshire,UK -Transport Engineer, by Brian Tinham -8 Feb 2011: -- Logistics giant Wincanton has purchased 11 new aerodynamic high-cube trailers for its Wavin contract, because of their fuel efficiency and ability to reduce CO2 emissions... Seven central support pillars, running down the length of the trailer, have been engineered to accept 12 moveable, cantilever arm racks, that can be positioned at any height. Trailer Orders * USA - Take a big bounce

Ringwood,NJ,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Nov 24, 2010: -- Net orders of dry van commercial trailers topped 17,126 units in October, according to data tracked by ACT Research Co., an order level 79% higher than the same month in 2009. This helped push trailer manufacturer backlogs up by over 5,000 units... Kenny Vieth, partner and president of ACT, added that order growth in the commercial trailer market is across the board and not limited to just dry van models, as eight of the nine trailer categories tracked by ACT posted year-over-year growth... Vieth added that sales of commercial trailers also experienced a far steeper drop off over the last several years compared to trucks, meaning that average equipment age is far higher. For example, while the average age of Class 8 trucks in U.S. fleets is now 6.5 years – the highest in 30 years – U.S. fleet dry van trailers now average 8.5 years... That higher average age is a direct result of a far more acute drop in sales, according to ACT, as trailer sales as a whole dropped to 79,432 units in 2009 – a nearly 50% drop from 144,377 units in 2008 and an over 75% decline from 277,398 units sold in 2006... Truck Trailer Orders * USA - Nearly Triple in September

Equipment demand, tonnage increased in September after falling in August

New York,NY,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Oct 29, 2010: -- Commercial truck trailer orders nearly tripled from a year ago in September and rose 19 percent from order levels in August, according to ACT Research... Net trailer orders were at their highest volume since May, when a surge in inventory restocking by retailers and corporate spending accelerated shipping demand... Vieth said, orders jumped 182 percent from a year ago...  The sequential increase, in particular, seems surprising, as the economy has been seen as slowing and freight volumes slipping in recent months... The surge in orders may represent demand for equipment to replace older units. The trailer market suffered its worst year in the past five decades in 2009... Heavy truck orders also surged in September, typically a weak sales month. Net Class 8 truck orders rose 23.2 percent from August and 37 percent from a year ago... The increase in truck and trailer orders tracked an increase in for-hire truck tonnage in September reported by the American Trucking Associations... The ATA's seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 1.7 percent in September after dropping in August and was up 5.1 percent from a year ago... The tonnage gain reflects an economy that is "barely growing," said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. Truck volumes leveled off over the summer, he said... (Photo by seriousaccidents: Semi Truck)

SALES * USA - Trailer demand holding up: Firm

New York,NY,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) -2 May 2007: -- North American truck sales might still be stagnant, but overall trailer demand has remained more or less robust, according to transportation market experts Bear Stearns... A tier-two supplier to large trailer OEMs tells the agency that orders have been firm, as most of the manufacturers expect a pick-up in demand in the second half of the year... Most of the downside of the industry is expected to be on the van side, while trailer demand in the agricultural sector -- driven by demand for ethanol and other biofuels -- is giving the trailer industry a boost...
