CLEANER TRUCKS * USA: California's Freight Action Plan

* California - Truck groups take issue with State Sustainable Freight Plan

--- The release of the final version of California’s Sustainable Freight Action Plan has been met with harsh criticism by two groups representing Golden State’s truck-fleet operators... The plan is important to trucking as the agency regards it as a “blueprint” for making the state’s freight transport system environmentally cleaner, more efficient, and more economically competitive... The ambitious plan includes “a long term-2050 vision and guiding principles for California’s future freight transport system” along with these slightly more near-term, albeit arguably vague targets:

° Improve freight system efficiency 25 percent by 2030
° Deploy over 100,000 zero-emission vehicles/equipment and “maximize near-zero” by 2020
° Foster future economic growth within the freight and goods movement industry

... In statement on the finalized action plan, Shawn Yadon, CEO of the California Trucking Association, said that for California to “spur innovation” in zero and near-zero emission technologies, the state “must make a business case for new investment from the trucking industry, which is already spending $1 billion a year to bring about a more sustainable freight system. Broad expansion of regulations targeting freight facilities will impede this progress by discouraging the investment needed to achieve California's environmental and economic goals” ...

GREEN NEWS * USA: Volvo Group hits energy efficiency target

* Noth Carolina - Mack Trucks cuts energy usage in Lower Macungie

-- Efforts at the Mack Trucks plant in Lower Macungie Township have helped Volvo Group North America hit its goal of reducing energy consumption at its U.S. facilities five years earlier than anticipated... According to the Energy Department, Volvo Group North America has saved approximately 390,000 MMBTUs since 2009, the equivalent to about $2.3 million in cost savings... In November 2013, the company announced the Lower Macungie plant was the first U.S. manufacturing facility to receive a platinum-level Superior Energy Performance certification in the Mature Energy Pathway category. The certification acknowledged the plant improved its energy performance by nearly 42 percent between 2002-03 and 2012-13... At that time, the company said plant investments that improved energy performance included lighting upgrades and controls, a building automation system, air compressor management, changes in heat recovery during manufacturing and HVAC system efficiency upgrades... The Better Buildings initiative was launched in 2011. According to the Energy Department, more than 250 organizations, including manufacturers, cities and school districts, participate in the program and have saved 94 trillion BTUs and $840 million since the initiative began. Each organization has committed to reducing energy use by at least 20 percent in the next 10 years, the Energy Department said...

BIG TRUCKS OF FUEL DIET * USA

* Michigan - E.P.A. proposal will put bigger trucks on a fuel diet

-- Inside the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory here, a mammoth contraption, with steel rollers, advanced electronics and exhaust tubes, is nearing completion... The project — an enormous “truck treadmill” — is the new centerpiece of the Environmental Protection Agency’s complex. One of the largest vehicle testing centers in the world, the truck lab will play a crucial role in shaping and enforcing a major new environmental mandate by the Obama administration that could dramatically transform America’s trucking industry... This week, the E.P.A. is expected to propose regulations to cut greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty trucks, requiring that their fuel economy increase up to 40 percent by 2027, compared with levels in 2010, according to people briefed on the proposal. A tractor-trailer now averages five to six miles a gallon of diesel. The new regulations would seek to raise that average to as much as nine miles a gallon. A truck’s emissions can vary greatly, depending on how much it is carrying... It is expected that the new rules will add $12,000 to $14,000 to the manufacturing cost of a new tractor-trailer, although E.P.A. studies estimate that cost will be recouped after 18 months by fuel savings... Environmental advocates say that without regulation, the contribution of American trucks to global warming will soar... But some in the trucking industry are wary...

"SUPER TRUCKS" * USA: To develop and test new, energy-efficient long-haul tractor-trailers

* New York -  Trucks more clean, efficient and long overdue

-- The idea that big tractor-trailer trucks could be overlooked might seem ludicrous when you're trying to merge onto a freeway with one bearing down on you at 70 miles per hour. But when it comes to energy efficiency and fuel economy -- that is to say, when it comes to CO2 emissions and climate change -- trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles have indeed been mostly overlooked so far. That's a problem -- and an opportunity... Consider this: Heavy-duty vehicles have largely avoided this type of regulation. The average "big rig" in the U.S. today gets about six mpg diesel, pretty much exactly what it did during the Reagan era. Heavy-duty vehicles are responsible for about one-third of CO2 emissions from the on-road transportation sector in the U.S.A., and unless things change, that proportion will rise to about half over the next 20 years, as passenger cars get more efficient. In other parts of the world, HDVs account for an even larger proportion of all transportation-GHG emissions, and their share is increasing even faster. All that CO2 represents gallons of fuel burned -- and is paid for by raising the cost of the goods carried on all those trucks... The U.S. Department of Energy has quietly sponsored a collaborative effort involving all the major truck manufacturers in the U.S.A. to develop and test new, energy-efficient long-haul tractor-trailers. As part of this "SuperTruck" program, Cummins/Peterbilt last year unveiled a prototype tractor-trailer that got 10.7 miles per gallon, and recently Daimler debuted a rival prototype, using a different design and technology, that gets just more than 12 mpg -- that is, double the fuel economy of the average long-haul tractor-trailer today. Our own research is showing that these technologies could enable tractor-trailers to get more than 10 mpg within the next 5-15 years and offer payback periods of less than 18 months -- well within current industry expectations... Only three other governments (Canada, Japan and China) have set any type of efficiency standards for trucks, and none have ventured into the same type of public/private cooperation on technology innovation. The U.S.A. could lead the way by pushing the advanced SuperTruck technologies into the market with a policy nudge. Big economies around the world have a huge opportunity to double the fuel efficiency of one of the largest sources of carbon emissions...

TRUCKS' EFFICIENCY * USA: Shell's ones

* Kentucky - Shell partners with AirFlow Truck Co. to develop ‘hyper’ fuel-efficient ‘StarShip’ truck
-- Being a former racecar driver and enthusiast, it was only natural that when Bob Sliwa got involved with heavy-duty Class 8 trucks he would want a truck to be as sleek and aerodynamic as possible... His first foray into building a fuel-efficient truck in 1983 was a good start. It was squared off in front but had full-length tractor skirts and top fairings... People said his second fuel-efficient creation resembled a Bullet Train so it was called the Bullet Truck, and got 13.4 mpg on a trip from Connecticut, Sliwa’s home state, to the West Coast... According to Shell and Sliwa, initial designs call for the StarShip tractor and trailer to join together into a single integrated unit... This will solve the problem of having a gap between the tractor and trailer, which is a big source of aerodynamic drag and loss of efficiency, noted Sliwa. The tractor and trailer will also have newly designed side skirts, hood, front end and custom interior. A tractor-to-trailer Active Aerodynamics gap sealer and the trailer skirts will all retract below 35 mph or when coming up on obstructions such as a railroad crossing... The StarShip truck is expected to complete cross-country testing in 2017 as it seeks to establish new fuel economy records for a Class 8 truck... GREEN TRUCKS * USA

* California - Time to act on trucks: We can reduce new truck fuel consumption 40% by 2025

Sacramento,CAL,USA -Sierra Club, by Jesse Prentice-Dunn -June 12, 2014: ... According to a new factsheet released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Environmental Defense Fund, and the American Council for and Energy-Efficient Economy, we have the technology to cost-effectively reduce new truck fuel consumption 40 percent by 2025... Tractor-trailers, responsible for two-thirds of medium and heavy-duty vehicle fuel use, can reduce fuel use 46 percent, with fuel savings paying for new technology in just over one year. Increasing the average fuel efficiency of a tractor-trailer from nearly six miles per gallon to nearly 11 miles per gallon would significantly reduce oil use in the transportation sector. Similarly, vocational vehicles, such as delivery trucks, and heavy-duty pickup trucks have opportunities to reduce fuel use 32 percent and 28 percent, respectively... Strong standards will reduce oil consumption. In 2012, trucks on the road consumed roughly 2.7 million barrels of fuel each day, resulting in 530 million metric tons of carbon pollution. Setting strong standards that build on existing standards could cut fuel use by 1.4 million barrels per day - roughly equivalent to our oil imports from Venezuela and Iraq in 2011 combined...

"GREEN" TRUCKS * USA - Truckers hope green options save green in wallet

Milton,PA,USA -AP, by GENARO C. ARMAS -14 July 2008: -- ... So-called "electrified truck stops," along with on-board tools such as auxiliary power units, have drawn interest from some truckers in part to reduce pollution and engine grind from idling and abide by a growing number of anti-idling guidelines nationwide. But lately, drivers like Ken Kafer have increasingly turned to them to also save money with fuel prices at record highs... "I'm saving fuel, engine wear, and I'm getting all the comforts that I need," said Kafer, 42, of Hubert, N.C., during a break at a truck stop in the central Pennsylvania town of Milton on a recent Iowa-to-New York run... Jim Runk, president of the Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association, said many truckers are using such options now because fuel prices are at a point where "they just can't put up with it"... Environmentalists have long been critical of the pollution emitted by diesel engines, with tractor-trailers among the most common and plentiful source of soot... A report from the Clean Air Task Force, an advocacy group, estimated in 2005 that 21,000 Americans' lives were shortened by particle emissions from diesel engines... The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2001 established new rules, including the introduction of cleaner highway diesel fuel in 2006 and requirements for manufacturing truck engines starting in 2007... Once fully enacted, the rules could lead to a reduction in 2.6 million tons of smog-causing nitrogen oxide emissions and prevent 8,300 premature deaths, the EPA has said... After initial resistance from the industry, most truckers are on board with the changes. There's additional impetus these days, with diesel prices pushing $4.70 per gallon...
