Portland,NY,USA -Go by Truck News -September 9, 2014: -- A regular run turned into a morning of heroics for owner-operator Jon Wilbur last June. Wilbur, who hails from Phillips, Maine, was trucking on the New York State Thruway near Portland, N.Y., when he spotted black smoke pouring off a bus on the shoulder... Wilbur immediately slowed his rig and pulled off the road ahead of the bus, which had blown a tire before catching fire... As it turned out, the 18 passengers, who included young adults, high school students and children, were in need of help. None had been injured, but as Wilbur approached, they were exiting the bus in a disorganized manner. Wilbur quickly ushered them out of the way of the smoke and flames... Once the passengers were safe, Wilbur emptied his fire extinguisher on the flames as the two bus drivers watched, unsure of how to help... Although Wilbur was unable to save the bus, he is credited with keeping the passengers safe and slowing the spread of the fire. For his bravery, the Truckload Carriers Association awarded him the Highway Angel designation and presented him with a certificate, a patch and a lapel pin...
