TRUCKER HERO USA & PERPETRATOR's PHOTO

* Georgia - Fund set for hero trucker shot 7 times in Oglethorpe man's deadly rampage

(Photo: The Victim: Paul Donald "Don" Davis)

-- A fund has been established to assist a man recently shot seven times while resisting the gunman who hijacked his truck during a deadly rampage in Oglethorpe County... After undergoing two surgeries, 58-year-old Paul Donald “Don” Davis is home and recovering from the injuries he suffered when shot while gunman Ryan Edgar Arnold held him hostage on Aug. 24... It currently is unknown whether the lifelong truck driver ever will return to work. One of Davis’ hands was badly mangled when two bullets tore through it; two fingers were amputated in one of the surgeries. Due to severe nerve damage, doctors won’t know for another year whether Davis will ever regain use of that hand. At least one more surgery is on the horizon...

... Davis started Don Davis Trucking 34 years ago and runs the business from his home in a rural area just outside the small community of Ila in rural Madison County... On the morning of Aug. 24, he was in a remote logging site in Oglethorpe County, his 18-wheeler fully loaded with timber to be hauled to an area saw mill. Arnold then appeared out of woods and at gunpoint ordered Davis to get in his truck and drive. The trucker didn’t yet know that Arnold had already shot his former girlfriend and threw 23-year-old Haley Hill from a speeding pickup truck as Arnold engaged pursuing police in a rolling gun battle...

* New York - Maine trucker heroics rescues busload of riders

(Photo courtesy: TCA - Jon Wilbur fought a fire on a bus as long as he could before the bus was engulfed in flames)
Portland,NY,USA -Go by Truck News -September 9, 2014: -- A regular run turned into a morning of heroics for owner-operator Jon Wilbur last June. Wilbur, who hails from Phillips, Maine, was trucking on the New York State Thruway near Portland, N.Y., when he spotted black smoke pouring off a bus on the shoulder... Wilbur immediately slowed his rig and pulled off the road ahead of the bus, which had blown a tire before catching fire... As it turned out, the 18 passengers, who included young adults, high school students and children, were in need of help. None had been injured, but as Wilbur approached, they were exiting the bus in a disorganized manner. Wilbur quickly ushered them out of the way of the smoke and flames... Once the passengers were safe, Wilbur emptied his fire extinguisher on the flames as the two bus drivers watched, unsure of how to help... Although Wilbur was unable to save the bus, he is credited with keeping the passengers safe and slowing the spread of the fire. For his bravery, the Truckload Carriers Association awarded him the Highway Angel designation and presented him with a certificate, a patch and a lapel pin...

ROAD HEROES * USA: Trucker & NJ Troopers: Everyone survived -

* Mississippi - Trucker hailed as Hero for assisting crash victims

Gulfport, Mississippi,USA -Video from YouTibe, by viralhog.com -Aug 17, 2014: -- Truck driver David Fredericksen and his co-driver, Walter Letterman, were making their weekly run from Lake Wales, Florida, to California, on Aug. 11 when a fiery accident involving an automobile and an 18-wheeler unfolded in front of them... A car t-bones a semi truck on I10 near Biloxi, Mississippi. The car struck the fuel tank of the semi causing a large fire ball. The doors of the car were jammed shut and the driver suffering a broken leg could not exit the vehicle... (Fredericksen's son comment:) "Luckily my father had a fire extinguisher on hand to fight back the flames and give enough time to pull the driver and her 1 year old granddaughter out of the flaming vehicle. Once the passengers are free from the vehicle the flames rapidly grow in strength consuming the vehicle... Thankfully my father had the presence of mind, bravery, and forethought of carrying a fire extinguisher, to be the first person on scene to risk his own life in order to possibly save another and to inspire others and lead them into taking action. Everyone involved in the rescue effort is a hero in my books... The police and fire department responded within minutes of the accident and also deserve praise... Remember to treat truck drivers well as they are often the first responders in automobile accidents... Everyone involved was okay, the driver of the vehicle suffered a broken leg and all others had only minor injuries... My father said he was surprised he was the first one there while everyone else stayed in their vehicles. It takes a huge amount of bravery to be the first to lend a hand. My guess is most people were hesitant to help because they figured the occupants could not have survived... When he went to pull the child out of the car the smoke made it very difficult for him to breathe and his only thought was getting the child out of the vehicle" ... In fact, they escaped relatively unharmed, according to Gulfport police, as did the driver of the 18-wheeler. Fredericksen, 45 and a father of four, first pulled open the passenger side door of the automobile, but then spotted the child in the back seat, and tended to her first...

* New Jersey - Troopers describe rescue of trucker from creek after tractor-trailer crashes in Ridgefield

(Photo by Tariq Zehawi: Emergency crews work the scene of a tractor trailer accident on the NJ Turnpike in Ridgefield)
Ridgefield,Bergen,USA -The North Jersey, by Stefanie Dazio -Aug 20, 2014: -- Three state troopers jumped into Overpeck Creek fully clothed to save a tractor-trailer driver’s life after his truck crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike on Tuesday morning... The call came just after 5:30 a.m., and the troopers found part of the tractor-trailer, including the cab, in flames and Lawrence Scherf, 66, of Vails Gate, N.Y. treading water on his back in the creek near Route 80. The trailer was dangling from an overpass near milepost 117, while the burned-out cab sat in the creek... While police don’t know whether the driver was ejected from the cab or got out on his own, his being out of the rig made the rescue possible... State troopers, Mohamed Hussein, threw in a life preserver, and the troopers dropped their leather utility belts and jumped into water up to their necks... Despite water rescue training in the academy, there’s nothing to prepare troopers for situations like these, their superiors said... “Every day these guys go out, it’s a challenge,” acting Lt. Michael Dulin said...

North American Highway Hero Award * USA - Goodyear’s Highway Hero is Jorge Sanchez

Louisville,KY,USA -Land Line Magazine -March 19, 2009: -- The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has honored Colorado truck driver Jorge Orozco Sanchez with the 26th Goodyear North American Highway Hero Award, in recognition of his effort in saving two young girls after a horrific highway accident this past October... Orozco Sanchez was hauling grain on Oct. 28, 2008 on Highway 392, north of Greeley, CO, when an SUV suddenly crossed the center line and crashed head-on into his tractor-trailer rig. After impact, the truck pushed the SUV backward down the road for about 200 feet... As the vehicles stopped moving, a shaken Orozco Sanchez quickly jumped from his cab and went to the other vehicle. There, with flames already beginning to surround the vehicles, he saw two girls, strapped into their car seats and crying, and a woman up front who was not moving. Working with a passer-by who used a fire extinguisher to fight back the flames, Orozco Sanchez used his knowledge of child car seats – he has two young children – to rescue the two girls... One of the youngsters was extracted quickly, but the fire was getting bigger and the smoke was so thick he had trouble seeing into the vehicle. He was finally able to remove the other girl. Then the truck’s saddle fuel tanks ruptured and exploded, creating an inferno. The 27-year-old mother died in the crash... Orozco Sanchez sustained burns on his arms from the rescue and was taken to a nearby hospital. The fire reduced the cab and the SUV to rubble, along with burning the side of a nearby building...

TRUCKER HERO * USA - Driver avoids major disaster as truck burns

Ripon,CAL,USA -The Manteca Bulletin, by Glenn Kahl -Feb. 27, 2009: -- With flames leaping some 75 feet into the early morning sky, a long haul truck driver prevented a possible catastrophe at the Flying J Truck Stop in Ripon Thursday... He told officers he had pulled into the Stop at about 5 p.m. Wednesday night to have dinner, planning to spend the night before driving into Stockton Thursday morning, officers said... It was about 4 a.m. when other truckers saw his truck was on fire and banged on the side of his sleeper unit telling him to get out. A box truck carrying a load of wine was parked next to his, and also caught on fire, but was quickly extinguished by firemen... Police said the back door of the trailer of his 18-wheeler was reportedly open, and fire was coming out the rear of the vehicle when the other truckers were trying to wake the driver. It was at that location that the bolt cutters were later discovered, firemen said... As others called 911, the trucker started up his vehicle, and steered it successfully out of the truck stop driving it west bound away from the facility to a point about a city block from Highway 99 where flames could be seen by early morning motorists... Firemen and police alike applauded the efforts of the driver from preventing a fire that could have spread to the many other trucks parked for the night at the facility as well as the danger in the nearby gas pumping operations... (Photo by GLENN KAHL/The Bulletin - Ripon firemen Justin Morris and Captain Neil Green position “hot dog” runoff tubing to contain caustic liquids still draining from a burned out truck trailer to prevent contamination in the storm drains following a spectacular early morning fire. The rear door of the trailer was open when other truckers discovered the blaze, police said. Flames leaped to an estimated 75 feet high as the driver steered his truck away from the trucking facility and its gas pumps)
