* DC - DOT Freight Transportation Index Rises 1.6%

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -8 Aug 2012: -- The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 1.6% in June from the same month last year, DOT said Wednesday... The freight TSI declined 0.1% to a reading of 109.5 from May, DOT said. The index uses a baseline 100 reading from the year 2000... June shipments were the seventh-highest level since the early recession month of July 2008, DOT said... The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit...
* DC - Intermodal Traffic Rises 3.3% for Week

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -10 Aug 2012: -- U.S. intermodal traffic rose 3.3% last week from a year ago, the Association of American Railroads reported. Container traffic for the week ended Aug. 4 rose 4.4% to 212,740 units, while trailers fell 4.3% to 30,521 units. Railroad carloads excluding intermodal rose 0.4% to 288,229 units, AAR said. Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-valued merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the long haul and trucks for the shorter distance at either end of the trip...
