* California - Toyota plans to sell fuel cell car by 2015
Torrance,CAL,USA -The Detroit Free Press, by Alisa Priddle -August 7, 2012: -- Toyota plans to sell a fuel cell vehicle in 2015, which would make it the clear leader in a technology most other automakers see as being about 10 years from market-ready... Toyota is sticking to its timetable of selling a fuel cell sedan in three years, said Justin Ward, advanced powertrain program manager at the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor... Volume could be substantial, but distribution will likely be centered in California – which plans to have 68 hydrogen fueling stations by the end of 2015, with New York and Connecticut also are promising to build a stronger hydrogen infrastructure, Ward said at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars. Ward said the fuel cell car will be available for both retail and commercial sale...

Spring Hill,TENN,USA -Associated Press/The Detroit News -August 8, 2012: -- Carmaker General Motors has begun manufacturing its new Ecotek automobile engine in Tennessee... Production began Wednesday at the former Saturn auto assembly plant, about 30 miles south of Nashville... GM is adding about 500 jobs to make the engine, which will initially power the redesigned Chevrolet Malibu sedan. The same power plant will eventually be used in a variety of General Motors vehicles... GM earlier announced it will also begin assembling the midsize crossover Chevrolet Equinox at the Spring Hill Plant. That production will entail an additional 700 jobs... * Michigan - Production of Jeep Liberty will halt on Aug. 16

Toledo,MICH,USA -The Detroit News -August 9, 2012: -- Chrysler Group LLC will halt production of the Jeep Liberty on Aug. 16 and begin retooling its Toledo North factory to produce an as-yet unnamed successor to the sport utility vehicle... Workers at the plant will be laid off "for several months," the company said Wednesday. The move was expected, though the date had not been announced... Chrysler will begin shipping the new model in the second quarter of 2013, according to Zach Leroux, the plant manager. The company also plans to add another shift there after it reopens...
* Michigan - Nissan hiring in Metro Detroit
Acme,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Melissa Burden -August 10, 2012: -- Nissan North America Inc. is hiring in Michigan, and the Japanese automaker is looking to create 9,000 jobs in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil over the next three years as part of a $5.2 billion investment... Nissan North America has 50 openings at its Farmington Hills facility, Carla Bailo, senior vice president of research and development for Nissan in the Americas, said. The automaker needs engineers in a variety of areas, she said... Nissan plans to add 150 jobs in the U.S. this year to support vehicle engineering and research and development, Bailo said... The automaker, which gained a record 8.2 percent of the U.S. market share last year, is looking to achieve 8 percent global market share by 2016, up from 6.2 percent in 2011... By building the Nissan Rogue and Infiniti JX in the U.S., Nissan by 2015 will build 85 percent of the vehicles it sells in the American market in the United States, up from 69 percent...

* Michigan - Ford recalls 16,000 Transit Connect vans

Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -August 10, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co. said Friday it is recalling 16,330 Transit Connect vans because wiper arms may not be adequately riveted, resulting in incomplete or inconsistent clearing of the windshield and possible detachment of the wiper arm.
The recall covers vehicles built in the 2011-12 model years. The automaker said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the issue. Ford said if the wiper arm detaches, the windshield wiper will fail and the driver's visibility may be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash. Some owners have complained of poor wiper performance and noisy wipers...* DC - Mitsubishi recalling i-MiEV to fix air bag sensors
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -August 9, 2012: -- Mitsubishi is recalling more than 300 electric vehicles in North America to fix faulty air bag sensors... The Japanese automaker said it is recalling the 2012 i-MiEV — including 261 in the United States and 49 in Canada — to fix sensors that may lead side curtain or frontal air bags not to deploy during a crash... The vehicles were built between November and December. The automaker has no reports of crashes or injuries. The investigation began in April after a customer complaint in Japan of an air bag warning light that failed to turn off...
