* Belgium - Commission proposes 95 grams by 2020

Brussels,Belgium -Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -1 Aug 2012: -- It has now been confirmed by the European Commission that the proposed target figure for CO2 emissions from new cars will be 95 grams per km by 2020. This is a reduction of around 27% from the mandatory average of 130 grams in 2015. Where vans are concerned, the mandatory figure is 175 grams in 2017, reducing to a proposed 147 grams in 2020...  The European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) thus welcomes the proposal, and in particular the fact that the targets are based on the NEDC test cycle currently in use, which provides manufacturers with a degree of certainty...

* Belgium - E-call set to be compulsory?

Brussels,Belgium -- Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -5 July 2012: -- The European Commission has approved a proposal which would add another piece of compulsory equipment to cars in the field of safety. It has proposed that in view of the failure of the voluntary scheme, all cars should be fitted with the eCall system which automatically alerts the emergency authorities in case of an accident. The system would use the emergency ‘112’ network. Czech MEP, Olga Sehnalova, and her German colleague, Dieter Lebrecht-Koch, also expressed the hope that by 2015 the system would be extended to other vehicles such as motorcycles, trucks and buses. The objective is to save lives by enabling emergency services to arrive at an accident scene more quickly...

* Belgium - Better cross-border roadworthiness recognition

Brussels,Belgium -Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -27 July 2012: -- In a move to better harmonise and facilitate the movement of vehicles between member states, the European Commission has published a proposal for regular roadworthiness tests. Although such tests already take place in individual states (MOT in the UK, Contrôle Technique in Belgium and France…), the new proposal would see better mutual recognition of testing regimes between states. The Commission is also calling for tighter regulations against tampering with the recorded mileage of a vehicle on its odometer. The European umbrella association for the leasing industry – Leaseurope – welcomes this move, pointing out that its interest derives from the fact that over 30% of motor vehicles sold in Europe are via leasing contracts...
