Harrow,Middlesex,Great Britain,UK -Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -20 Aug 2012: -- Figures compiled by Jato show that Europe’s new car market is continuing to suffer from the economic crisis. July sales were down by 8.2%, bringing the year to date decline to 4.9% compared to the first seven months of 2011. Of the big five markets, Italy and Spain were both down by over 20% in July, Germany and France by a more modest 5% and 7% respectively, while only the UK was in positive territory, up by some 9%. The UK is also the only one of the five to have seen a YTD increase in sales (up 3.5%) while Germany is virtually unchanged from last year and France, Spain and Italy are all down, by 13%, 12% and 7% respectively... Volkswagen still tops the brand list, despite being slightly down both for the month and YTD. Ford, down by 15% in the month and 7% YTD, nevertheless remains in second spot in both categories. * German market figures artificially inflated?

Berlin,Germany -Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -6 Aug 2012: -- Figures released by Germany’s federal transport agency show that sales of new cars in the country in July were 248,000, 5% down on July 2011. This brings the total for the first seven months of the year to almost 1.9 million, a figure which is similar to that of the same period last year. However, a Reuters report relayed by Automotive News Europe points to the fact that the real level of sales in Europe’s largest car market may be lower than the official figure. In a practice known as ‘self sales’ or ‘self registration’, manufacturers are selling cars to dealers and others within the industry, these registrations inflating the figures without the cars necessarily being put on the road...
