* Japan - Reconstruction spurs truck demand: Debris removal boosts this year's expected domestic sales to over 800,000 units

Tokyo,Japan -The Daily Yomiuri Shimbun, by Kohei Nakashima -Aug. 20, 2012: -- An Isuzu truck transports disaster debris in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture. The license plate number of the truck has been obscured... Transporting debris from last year's devastating Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami has spurred great domestic demand for trucks, with sales of more than 800,000 units expected this year for the first time since 2008... As progress in removing debris in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures continues, domestic automakers have boosted their production of trucks. Foreign automakers also are eyeing opportunities to enter the Japanese market...
The nation's largest truck maker, Isuzu Motors Ltd., has seen a significant rise in domestic sales of its tilt-back dump truck... While production of the truck has increased worldwide, sales of the model targeting the domestic market grew to about 30 percent from 10 percent in autumn last year... According to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Inc., domestic truck sales in the January-June period this year jumped 37 percent to 414,527 units from the same period last year... On an annual basis, the number is expected to surpass 800,000 units for the first time in four years, the highest since 2008... Of the total, sales of trucks for carrying disaster debris are expected to increase by 10,000 on an annual basis...  The market share for trucks in the domestic market has been steady, a Nagoya-based research company Fourin Inc. official said, but competition is expected to increase...
